National Indigenous Peoples Day 2026 – Morning Shift 

Date: Friday June 19, 2026 

Time: 9:00 am – 1 pm

National Indigenous Peoples Day, celebrated annually, recognizes and honours the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. It promotes awareness of Indigenous history and supports reconciliation by celebrating the diverse heritages of over 1.8 million Indigenous people. 

  

 

  

Key Responsibilities 

  

Set up for event and then rotate through 7 stations 

 

Stations: 

  • Inside Guest Room  

  • Runners from Guest Room (Stationed in Guest Room) 

  • Guest navigators (these 2 stationed with Heather and Ryan) 

  • Food Service 

  • Sacred Fire 

  • South Barricade (moving barricades, welcoming people) 

  • North Barricade (welcome people) 

 

Shifts/Time Commitment 

 9:30 am – 1pm on Friday June 19, 2026 

 

Location 

 Bissell East building 10527 96 St 

  

Training 

There will be a volunteer ambassador, and acting volunteer coordinator on site to brief you of duties at each station.

Logistics: 

Please check in with the acting volunteer coordinator to receive last-minute instructions, an apron, a lanyard (if you did not bring your own white Bissell lanyard) and information. 

Please do not leave without checking out at the volunteer registration table and returning the volunteer apron. Also, if you would like some lunch, please help yourself before leaving. 

Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and shoes. This celebration takes place outside in-between the Bissell East and Bissell West buildings. 

Please bring your own refillable water bottle, though there will be water and coffee available. 

There is free street parking on the streets around Bissell Centre. Note that the small Visitor Parking to the south of Bissell’s east building is reserved for Elders attending the event. 

If you suspect someone is experiencing drug poisoning, naloxone kits will be available throughout the premises, and all Bissell Centre staff are trained in how to administer it.
