Position Summary
Sources White Rock / South Surrey Food Bank serves approximately 1000 individuals a week by providing nutritious food and support to community members in need. The Food Bank strives to raise awareness about poverty, and to involve the community in solutions. The Food Banks is proud to offer a choice based model for our clients. This model contributes to the preservation of dignity and power of choice for the clients, and lends to an overall more positive experience while assessing the Food Bank.
Reporting to the Program Manager, the General Volunteer assists will all tasks relating to the current need within the White Rock / South Surrey Food Bank. These tasks include greeting and attending to clients as they arrive, direct food distribution, weighing and sorting of food donations, and/or stocking of shelves.
To be successful in this position, you must:
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Be able to lift a minimum 20 lbs and be on your feet for the duration of your shift.
- Have good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Be flexible, detail oriented with strong organizational skills and possess an ability to take initiative, accept direction and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
- Have the ability to work well with diverse client populations. Ability to relate to individuals across all socioeconomic and cultural groups, looking through a lens of poverty and poverty-related issues.
- Have the ability to build rapport with a variety of individuals while maintaining a professional demeanor and firm professional boundaries.
- Have the ability to exercise good judgement in a demanding and continually changing work environment.
- Be willing to secure a Criminal Record Check (at no cost to Sources volunteers). All positions have been designated by the Sources Community Resource Society as requiring a Criminal Records Review prior to an applicant being employed in this capacity. Certain police records may preclude the appointment to certain positions.
Responsibilities:
Typical activities which volunteers will be asked to assist with depending on the specific position. These include but are not limited to the following:
- Sorting and Storage – duties include unpacking donated food items, weighing and recording them, and inspecting them for damage and expiration dates.
- Dividing – duties include dividing and packaging food items in preparation for distribution to clients.
- Attendance – duties include managing the “front-of-house,” greeting and checking in clients using our Link2Feed software system.
- Distribution – duties include distributing food and non-food items to food bank clients, ensuring shelves are stocked, and keeping the pace of flow running efficiently.
- Do not accept remuneration from clients, including cash or gifts.
- Ensure workspace and food bank at large is kept tidy, organized and free of hazards.
- Keeping informed of updates through a communication station.
- Informing staff when unable to attend shift.
- Ensuring that SOURCES Policies and Procedures are followed, as well as the operating procedures of the White Rock / South Surrey Food Bank.
- Ensures that the rights, dignity and confidentiality of all clients are maintained. Ensures the health and safety of all clients in the course of working with them.
Time Commitment:
This opportunity requires a minimum 6-month commitment of its volunteers.
