Volunteer program: Melbourne Music Week               

 

Volunteer roles: 

There are three roles to choose from-

  • Back of House (BOH)
  • Event Operations and Support
  • Front of House (FOH) - Customer Service

When completing the application form please choose two preferred roles (preferred roles are not guaranteed).

Applicants must be over the age of 18 to be eligible for a volunteer position.

Applications close midnight, Wednesday 11 September, 2019.

Estimated hours and time commitment:

  • Volunteers are to attend a compulsory interview and induction session if successful in obtaining a position (dates outlined in application form).
  • Shifts are a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 8 hours in length (appropriate breaks given for shifts that are 5 hours or longer).
  • Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of 3 shifts during the event
  • Volunteers can undertake multiple shifts per day. 
  • Shifts will be rostered between the hours of 8.00am and 1:00am.

 

Role Descriptions:

Back of House

Volunteers will primarily be engaged to gain experience in assisting the Back of House (BOH) team in various duties for  MMW shows. Volunteers undertaking these shifts should feel comfortable standing or being mobile for long periods of time, live music at concert sound levels and engaging in a fast paced environment. Below is a list of the key tasks that will be undertaken by BOH Volunteers.

  • Undertake specific duties as directed by your supervisor
  • BOH runners/operational assistance
  • Assist with set up and pack down of event requirements
  • Assist with back of house operations (Including Green room and back of stage organization)
  • Event Operation Centre (EOC) support
  • Assisting artists with load in
  • Distributing accreditation and briefing artists on arrival
  • Participate in radio communications with vital areas of the event e.g. Event Operations Centre (EOC), Volunteer Coordinator etc. 

Event Operations and Support

Volunteers will be engaged to gain experience in assisting the Event Management team with a number of event duties for the duration of MMW 2019. Volunteers undertaking these shifts should feel comfortable standing or being mobile for long periods of time and engaging in a fast paced environment. Volunteers will be supervised in most cases, however should be comfortable acting autonomously if required. Some Event Operations and Support volunteer tasks include:

  • Undertake specific duties as directed by your supervisor
  • Assist with runner duties including onsite and offsite deliveries and relaying messages to staff and other volunteers
  • Assist with set up and pack down of event requirements
  • Event Operations Centre (EOC) support
  • Assist with general enquiries e.g. site specific questions and programming information
  • Participate in radio communications with vital areas of the event e.g. Event Operations Centre (EOC), Volunteer Coordinator etc. (role specific)
  • Assist Event Management team with other duties as required in order to experience many event management processes.
  • Represent Melbourne Music Week and support events outside of the Hub location.

Front of House (FOH) - Customer Service

Volunteers will be engaged to experience Front of House (FOH) aspects of event management including customer service roles for the duration of MMW 2019. Volunteers undertaking these shifts should feel comfortable standing or being mobile for long periods of time and engaging with the public in a fast paced environment. Some FOH volunteer tasks include:

  • Undertake specific duties as outlined by your supervisor
  • Welcome patrons in a warm and professional manner
  • Assist with front of house operations
  • Assist with entry control, ticket scanning & wrist banding of patrons
  • Assist with promotional tasks e.g. handing out event flyers/brochures
  • Assist with general enquiries e.g. site specific questions and programming information
  • Information booth support including manning and stocking/ maintaining festival collateral
  • Support event staff and Volunteer Coordinator in the facilitation of ticket sales if applicable (please note that volunteers are not permitted to handle cash/credit cards or facilitate sales)
  • Participate in radio communications with vital areas of the event e.g. Event Management Centre (EMC), Volunteer Coordinator etc. (role specific)
  • Represent Melbourne Music Week and support events outside of the Hub location.

  • Previous volunteer experience desirable, but not essential

PRIMARY PROFILE. – Operations - field work – 70-90%

SECONDARY PROFILE: TYPE: 16 – Standing, walking and use of stairs – Officers and Volunteers

TYPICAL TASKS: Tasks are mainly based out in the field, across both outdoor or undercover areas /indoor facilities. There is a small amount of desk or bench type computer/screen based activities and correspondence. The role involves significant standing and movement across various surfaces, including stairs or inclines and may require observational work and/or checking various assets during site work with other officers or volunteers, third party representatives and the public who may require provision of assistance or guidance and information.
