VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION – Meaningful Meals for Seniors Program

The purpose of the Meaningful Meals program is to help reduce the effects of loneliness for socially isolated and vulnerable seniors living in Coquitlam. Through the delivery of nutritious, frozen meals, volunteers will provide the opportunity for friendly conversation and connections to City resources, services and programs.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license with at least 1-2 years driving experience
  • Have access to a vehicle
  • Valid Insurance – name on policy
  • Access to use of cell phone to ensure two-way communication
  • Drivers Abstract
  • Police Information Check
  • Reference Checks
  • Orientation
  • Meal Contract

Responsibilities:

  • On the day of delivery, driver picks up food, delivery instructions and route map at Dogwood Pavilion
  • Delivers food to Coquitlam seniors homes; following route plan
  • Provide face to face interaction; engage the participant in friendly conversation
  • Connect participants to the community by providing information about City resources, services and programs
  • Be a supportive, listening ear
  • Inform the Supervisor of any undelivered meals, concerns about a senior or any concerns relating to meal delivery
  • Return coolers and extra meals supplies to Dogwood Pavilion or Glen Pine Pavilion at the end of your shift
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality

Requirements:

  • Own a cellular phone
  • Must have access to a vehicle that is clean, in good repair
  • Competent navigator and safe driver
  • Good interpersonal skills: friendly, outgoing, courteous, patient, respectful
  • Able to communicate in a clear and effective manner
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve
  • Punctual and reliable

Training and Support

  • Recreation staff available for support during delivery times
  • Orientation on day of delivery

Commitment:

  • You can volunteer on a weekly, monthly or on-call basis.
  •  Deliveries take place every Tuesday between 10 am to 12 pm.
  • Delivery time will vary, and will depend on the length of conversation/interaction at each household

Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Assisting instructor in delivery of program.  For example: helping prepare supplies and lead games; setup and clean up

  • Supporting to individuals and encouraging interaction between participants

  • Connecting and interacting with staff and kids

  • Role modeling appropriate behaviour for all participants through active participation

  • Participating in the program and having fun!!
