Reception/Greeter Duties
Focus of the job: The main responsibilities of the Volunteer Reception/Greeter are to greet visitors, answer phones, direct calls to staff, provide information about HSforBC and our adoption process, and accept donations. Additionally, the Volunteer Reception/Greeter will be responsible for assigned administrative tasks, special projects and maintaining the lobby area.
Organizational Impact: HSforBC prides itself on being an animal welfare organization that is a part of the community. Our greeters embody this philosophy; they provide friendly and cheerful direction designed to help our visitors successfully navigate HSforBC services.
Key Requirements: Outgoing personality, ability to work independently and demonstrate in-depth understanding of HSforBC operations, policies and protocols.
Shift Hours: Monday-Friday – Noon to 5pm (3 to 5 hour shifts)
Core responsibilities:
- Customer Service
- Present a positive attitude at all times
- Greet each client as they enter the shelter.
- Determine reason for visit and provide direction and/or forms as required.
- Answer general questions about HSforBC and be able to refer to appropriate contact if necessary.
- Other responsibilities
- Log, sort, organize incoming donations
- Assist with office tasks
- Answer phones
- Keep lobby area clean, wipe counters, tables, as needed
- Assist with setting up for orientation
Essential Capabilities:
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to bend and squat in order to pick up items.
- Ability to see well enough to move safely throughout the building, distinguish animal body language, as well as to read instructions, signs and paperwork.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally.
- Ability to cope with a loud environment due to animal or other noises.
- Cognitive Capabilities
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while recognizing limitations in knowledge and abilities (knowing when to ask for help if needed).
- Ability to read and understand written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to pay attention to details.
- Ability to proactively problem solve.
- Ability to accept and implement redirection and constructive criticism.
- Ability to communicate professionally and politely with staff, other volunteers and members of the public.
- Ability to understand differences and accept boundaries between the role of the volunteer and the role of the staff.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and a solution-oriented approach to challenging situations.
Dress Code:
- Volunteer T-shirt, closed toe shoes, clean & presentable, yet comfortable clothing. Jeans or shorts are ok. Bring a sweater or sweatshirt to have on hand if it gets cold in the office.
