St. Paul's Hospital - Hemodialysis Volunteer

Volunteer must be 18 years of age or older
Weekly Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of one shift per week. Shifts are 2-3 hours in length
Position Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months or 40 volunteer hours.
About the Role:
The Hemodialysis Volunteer role has a social focus. Volunteers are expected to visit with the patients which can help to alleviate loneliness and boredom while they are on the unit for dialysis. This role supports patients, their families and staff.
Duties:
- Spending time visiting patients is one of the primary duties of an associate. A volunteer's friendly smile and caring disposition may help patients feel more comfortable before, during or after their treatment. Associates offer socialization and non-medical support to patients.
- Assist with getting patients to and from the Unit as needed.,
- Volunteers may also perform Unit related tasks

- The ability to work independently
Additional Information:
Hemodialysis is the most common way to treat advanced kidney failure. It is a treatment that cleans the blood, regulates water and removes waste from the body when a person’s kidneys no longer function. This is referred to as “life-sustaining therapy” as without dialysis a person would not live. It affects people in different ways, but some are still able to be active in their communities, work or go to school.
