Duties

Surgical Suite Assistants are responsible for assisting with:

• Cleaning all areas of the surgery suite which includes following strict sanitation guidelines, cleaning top and bottom cages, sweeping and mopping large areas
• Cleaning surgical tools properly, creating surgical packs and using the autoclave properly
• Completing and folding laundry in a timely manner
• Monitoring surgical patients in recovery (will be trained on extubation and monitoring after several weeks in position)

Please note: there is very limited to no animal handling with this position.

Shift Times

8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. -- Monday - Thursdays 

Surgical suite shifts are either morning or afternoon shifts, 4-hours in length and are set as weekly shifts, preferably with a minimum 6-month commitment, but not required. 

Qualifications

Greenhill Humane Society has the additional following requirements for participation in this position. Volunteers in this role must be 18 years of age or older.

Physical Capabilities

• Ability to stand, walk, and maneuver well in tight spaces for significant periods of time while cleaning and working in the Surgical Suite.
• Ability to work around strong odors and cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to bend, squat, reach and lift in order to access and put away supplies, sweep and mop, clean surgery rooms and replace bedding, toys, litter pans, and food/water dishes in animal housing areas.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally with all shelter staff, customers and other volunteers.

Cognitive Capabilities

• Ability to commit to a set weekly 4-hour shift for at least 6 months.
• Ability to understand, remember, and following instructions and procedures.
• Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision while knowing when to ask for help if needed.
• Basic understanding of animals, their body language and behavior.

Training Requirements

Multiple one-on-one trainings with surgery team.

Supervisor: Surgery staff.
