Volunteering - Cattery Matchmaker
Duties
The role of the Cattery Matchmaker volunteer is to assist interested adopters in finding a "purrfect" match for their home. Volunteers help guide visitors and adopters through their visit to the cattery.
General Responsibilities
- Review adoption applications and identify appropriate cats or kittens for each adopter to meet.
- Ask questions about each adopter's home and lifestyle to learn more about the adopter's needs and interests.
- Identify situations where additional adoption counseling may be needed, and notify Adoption Counselors or cattery staff.
- Alert cattery staff of any concerns with a potential adoption.
Shift Times
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. -- 7 days a week
Qualifications
Greenhill Humane Society has the following requirements for participation in this position.
Physical Capabilities
- Comfortable interacting with public and knowledge of cats in a shelter situation, professional attitude.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and answer questions from members of the public and/or direct members of the public to staff.
- Ability to greet potential adopters and offer assistance.
- Ability to “pass off” important cat information to the next cattery matchmaker and/or adoption counselors.
- Ability to meet, greet and respectfully handle cats.
- Quick reflexes and ability to prevent “door dashers” from escaping when entering the cattery, as well as side rooms.
- Ability to hear if cat is giving verbal warnings, such as hissing or growling.
- Ability to bend, squat, kneel and stand to perform various duties during shift (example: fill water bowls, scoop litter boxes, brush cat trees, or other helpful tasks)
Cognitive Capabilities
- Ability to assess basic cat behavior and cues.
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision while knowing when to ask for help if needed.
- Ability to read and understand instructions, notes about specific cats, and cattery procedures.
- Ability to focus on cats and recognize changes in behavior and when to leave a cat alone (example: cat hisses, growls, or runs away).
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor at all times in the cattery.
- Ability to pay close attention to members of the public and recognize appropriate behavior.
