HIAS Mentors work one-on-one with asylum seekers (HIAS legal clients) based in the DMV. The support mentors offer makes a significant difference in HIAS clients’ comfort in their new communities and capacity to face the many challenges related to and resulting from the legal process. Mentor and client partner relationships often include:

  • Support in navigating the American educational system
  • Help in professional networking and/or finding employment
  • Assistance in accessing and navigating psychosocial and medical systems and services

The ideal mentor will think creatively about connecting client partners to local communities, resources and neighbors (eg. informing them of local events, opportunities, and/or networks). All applicants to the mentorship program must also be prepared to support their client partners if and when they encounter emotionally and/or psychologically difficult situations.

Mentors meet with their client partners for at least two hours per week for a duration of at least 6 months. After 6 months, mentors and client partners will decide whether to continue for another term. Weekday availability is preferred but not required.
