Current Volunteer Opportunities

Community Delivery - Volunteer Driver (Occasional)

Use your vehicle to deliver food parcels to local clients who are unable to come to Kerr Street Mission in person due to health, mobility or other reasons.  Suitable for volunteers aged 18+ who can lift and carry up to 30lbs.
 

Shifts:

  • Help us out occasionally on Wednesdays as a backup driver. Time commitment is approximately one hour between noon and 3pm.

Responsibilities:  

  • Once a week, deliver food parcels according to a prescribed route within the Oakville area (approximately 5-8 drop offs per shift) 
  • Arrive at KSM at the scheduled time to pick up food parcels and load car 
  • Follow route to clients addresses, following the drop off instructions on the list provided 
  • If contact cannot be made, return the food parcels to KSM 
  • Contact the Community Delivery Coordinator if any issues arise along the route and also to confirm deliveries have been made 
  • Shred documents containing client information once deliveries are complete 
  • Represent KSM in a positive and caring way with our clients and in the community 
Requirements:  
  • Must be 18 
  • Must be reliable and punctual 
  • Good driver with valid drivers license and current auto insurance 
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs with no issue 
  • Possess a mobile phone with text capability  
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Possess compassion and patience, and respect for client confidentiality 
  • Ability to cover cost of gas/mileage for weekly trips 
  • A Vulnerable Sector Check (police check) is required

Facility Cleaning Volunteer

Seeking 2-3 volunteers per day to help us maintain a high standard of cleanliness in our facility.

Available Shifts:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday afternoons (Timing is flexible)

Responsibilities:

  • General cleaning - wiping surfaces and identifying and cleaning surfaces that may be in need.
  • Clean high traffic touch points (door knobs, light switches)
  • Wipe down walls & doors
  • Wipe tables & chairs
  • Clean windows internally (and externally when weather permits) - no heights
  • Conduct bathroom checks - restocking and performing light maintenance when needed
  • Tidy staff room
  • Empty garbage and recycling bins

Requirements:

  • Must be 18+.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Good problem-solving ability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organized and communicative.

Commitment: Minimum 3 months.

 

Parking Lot Attendant (Summer Camp)

Seeking friendly and patient volunteers to help us support parking lot safety during our summer camp pickup and dropoff times, committing to one shift per week in the summer. 

Suitable for volunteers 18+. 

Available Shifts:

From June 30 - Aug 22 (excluding July 1 and Aug 4)
  • 830-930am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
  • 2:30-3:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Please note that Thursday afternoon shift times may start/end later during Summer BBQ days
 

Responsibilities:

  • Arrive for your shift on time
  • Place our Parking Lot Closed signs out as directed
  • Warmly welcome campers and their accompanying adults
  • Stand by the Parking Lot Closed signs at the entrance to the KSM parking lot, and the parking lot of the condo building across the street (one volunteer at each)
  • Both volunteers will encourage a safe and constant flow of traffic using a 'kiss and ride' approach
  • Respectfully redirect visitors who are attempting to enter parking lot during your shift time
  • Monitor the dropoffs and ensure cars are not stopped at entrance for an inordinate amount of time
  • Escalate any issues to KSM staff
  • Store parking lot closed signs in designated area when your shift is complete
  • Maintain patience and calmly deal with any conflicts that arise

Requirements:

  • Must be 18+. 
  • Must be very reliable
  • Clear and current Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • Must be patient and compassionate.
  • Ability to give direction in a respectful way
  • Great judgement and problem solving ability
  • Enjoy working outdoors, rain or shine
Commitment: One shift per week for during July & August excluding July 1 and Aug 4)

Summer Student - Warehouse Volunteer

Help our Food Services Team receive deliveries, stock our food market and manage our food inventory, leading to a positive shopping experience for the patrons of our food bank.

Suitable for volunteers 16+ who can lift up to 50lbs and who can commit to one shift per week during July & August.

Available Shifts

  • Monday to Friday 8:30am-10:30am

Responsibilities:

  • Help Stock the KSM Food Market by loading in fresh food products, bringing additional inventory from food storage locations
  • Help load and unload deliveries, putting items away in designated locations
  • Engage with food donors, greeting them warmly and thanking them on behalf of KSM.  
  • Follow processes to ensure donations are appropriately weighed and logged in our tracking system
  • Shuffle inventory in storage locations as needed to maintain a steady flow of produce following a first in, first out process.
  • Organize food in refrigeration units and ensure that the unit temperatures are maintained
  • Keep the KSM warehouse and work areas clean and organized according to warehouse processes and standards.
  • Dispose of recycling and clutter as needed. 
  • Maintain a courteous and professional manner with staff and other volunteers.

Requirements:

  • Must be 16+.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Good problem-solving ability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organized and communicative.

Commitment: One shift per week for the duration of the summer.
