Youth & Community Programs - Driver Mentor - Braking the Cycle

Primary purpose of role:                The role of the Braking the Cycle (BTC) Mentor is to participate in the “Braking the Cycle Program” which helps disadvantaged youth complete their 100 driver hours required to obtain their provisional driver’s license. Mentors are to instruct young drivers on road safety through both theoretical and practical training.

                             Driver mentors act as a role model to help disadvantaged youth build their confidence, patience and resilience whilst participating in the program.

 

General Tasks
  • Following the direction of the local coordinator and acting in a professional manner at all times
  • Comply with BTC educational program requirements ensuring that learner drivers are supported to undertake the mandatory theoretical component
  • Actively provide guidance and support during driving sessions i.e. safe driving practices and operational use of vehicles, road rules. 
  • Complete pre-session preparation i.e. checking participant files to ensure familiarity with progress 
  • Complete mandatory theoretical and practical training, and complete annual compliance training.

Skills and experience required:
  • Hold a QLD open drivers’ licence for more than 12 months 
  • Up-to-date knowledge of QLD road rules 
  • Clear driving and criminal record 
  • Capacity to support learner drivers and ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high level of accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Respectful of confidential information 
  • Positively contribute to a safe and supportive service environment for children and young people
