Foster Care, Dogs: Stratford-Perth/ Kitchener-Waterloo

Foster Volunteers will support The Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo & Stratford Perth and our adoption dogs by providing care within their own home, while the dogs are waiting to find their forever homes.

Assignment Responsibilities:

  • Providing daily care to an assigned foster dog in ones private home, including: feeding, walking, house training, behavior training.
  • Transporting dogs to the centre for medical appointments and adoption appointments.
  • Picking up supplies or medications from the centre, transporting to private home.
  • Communicating with the Foster Coordinator ongoing with updates and photos to be used for adoption promotion, through email communication.

Other Requirements & Assignment Boundaries:

  • Must be age 18 years of age or older.
  • Must reside in the Kitchener-Waterloo or Stratford Perth area.
  • Existing animals in their home are spayed/ neutered, up to date on vaccines, and have current license tag(s) for canines.
  • Volunteers, if renting, must show landlord consent for animals in the home.
  • Volunteers must have a separate area for fosters.
  • Volunteers must have access to transportation for vet appointments/ medical emergencies, and supply or medication pick-ups.
  • Must adhere to the policies outlined in the Foster Waiver form.
  • Follow all Policies & Procedures as outlined by the Volunteer Manager or Foster Coordinator.
  • Volunteers must also have a working email address and telephone.

Qualifications:

  • Must have experience with medium and large size dogs.
  • Must be able to walk dogs weighing 40-80 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and walk independently.
  • Ability to lift items up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be comfortable handling the following behaviors: jumping up, mouthing, barking, pulling on a leash and house training.
  • Ability to cope with potential emotionally stressful situations.
  • Patient, calm demeanor and an interest in working with dogs who have behavior challenges.

Training & Supervision:

  • Volunteers will complete a training presentation and quiz.
  • Volunteers will complete one on one in-person training with Canine Specialist on-site. 
  • Ongoing training as needed.
  • Volunteers will communicate directly with the Foster Coordinator ongoing.

Time Commitment: 6 months.  Must be available to start immediately.

 

Foster Care, Cats & Small Animals: Stratford Perth/ Kitchener-Waterloo

  • Ability to lift items up to 15 lbs.
  • Must be comfortable handling the following behaviors, as the animal adjusts to its new environment: hiding, hissing, refusal to eat, anxiety.
  • Ability to cope with potential emotionally stressful situations.
  • Patient, calm demeanor and an interest in working with animals

Training & Supervision:

  • Volunteers will complete an on-line cat behaviour certificate training course.
  • TLC Cat Fosters will complete 2 in-person TLC training shifts.
  • Ongoing training as needed.
  • Volunteers will communicate directly with the Foster Coordinator ongoing.

Time Commitment: 6 months.  Must be available to start immediately.

Kitchener: Canine Companion

Volunteers will support adoption dogs by training, socializing and exercising adoption dogs, to maintain their well-being while in a shelter environment.

Assignment Responsibilities:

  • Use positive reinforcement training techniques and procedures.
  • Walk and provide enrichment to only yellow labelled dogs.
  • Walk adoption dogs on centre property or along side of the road.
  • Socialize or provide enrichment to adoption dogs in the adoption room or alternative room.
  • Record observations about each dog, including health or behavioral concerns in the Canine Log Book at the end of volunteer shift.
  • Clean kennel of feces before taking a dog out of the kennel for a walk.
  • Refill water bowl when returning a dog to their kennel.

 

Other Requirements & Assignment Boundaries:

  • Must be age 18 years of age or older.
  • Must only walk yellow labelled dogs.
  • Must follow resource guarding protocols for all adoption dogs when entering kennels.
  • Must not allow other volunteers or members of the public to interact with adoption dogs. Only volunteers approved by our Canine Specialists and trained, are allowed interact with adoption dogs
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times and sign the confidentiality agreement.
  • Must follow all HSKWSP policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must have experience with medium and large size dogs in a formal or informal setting.
  • Must be able to walk dogs weighing 40-80 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and walk independently.
  • Must be comfortable handling the following behaviors: jumping up, mouthing, barking, pulling on a leash.
  • Ability to cope with potential emotionally stressful situations.
  • Patient, calm demeanor and an interest in working with dogs who have behavior challenges.
  • Ability to record session observations using written language.

 

Time Commitment: 6 months.  A consistent weekly 2-hour scheduled shift.

 

We are currently recruiting for the following shifts:

Monday 12pm-2pm

Tuesday 12-2pm

Wednesday 10am-12pm, 3:30pm-5:30pm

Thursday 3:30pm-5:30pm

Friday 10am-12pm or 12pm-2pm

Saturday 1-2pm

Sunday 11am-1pm

Stratford Perth: Adoption Dog Kennels

Volunteers will support adoption dogs by maintaining a clean and healthy atmosphere and helping with general animal husbandry.

Assignment Responsibilities:

  • Assist Animal Care with the morning cleaning, which includes:
  • Scrubbing of kennels, floors, karanda beds, windows, outdoor runs and quiet room.
  • Following feeding guidelines, measuring food and providing food/ water.
  • Providing appropriate sized toys/ enrichment items for each dog.
  • Changing linens in kennel as needed.
  • Fill out daily animal health charts.
  • Reporting to Animal Care Attendants any health or behavioural problems in animals.
  • Follow communication signs on kennel door.
  • Follow proper disease prevention policies and procedures.
  • Provide 30 minutes of enrichment to an adoption dog upon completion of cleaning.  The dog will be selected by our Canine Team.

 

Other Requirements & Assignment Boundaries:

  • Must be age 18 years of age or older.
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times and sign the confidentiality agreement.
  • Must follow all HSKWSP policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to carry out tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow processes and work independently.

Time Commitment: 6 months.  A weekly 3-hour scheduled shift.

We are currently recruiting for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday-  8:30am-11:30am.
