Our Children Services programs are based out of:

Volunteer opportunities in Children Services are typically a good fit for people who are:

  • 14+ years of age
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Available weekday afternoons and during non-instructional days (e.g. Spring and Summer Break)
  • Interested in exploring a career in teaching or childcare work

Applying to Volunteer:

  • Fill in an application (link)
  • Sign up for and attend an interview
  • Complete and submit a Criminal Record Check
  • Review the Volunteer Handbook and submit a Volunteer Agreement Form
  • Sign up for and attend a Volunteer Orientation

Volunteer opportunities are posted seasonally in line with the City's Leisure Guide.

Volunteer Opportunities

Afterschool Active

Afterschool Active includes 60 minutes of active play time in the gymnasium. Programs at Port Coquitlam Community Centre may also include swimming in the Leisure Pool. Volunteers play an active role in supporting children ages 7 to 10 as they learn the FUNdamentals of various sports and games.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 14 years of age and in Grade 9 or above
  • Experience working with children is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of various sports
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall

Afterschool Program Volunteer

Assist Children Services staff in delivering high-quality after school programming for children ages 6-10, including Kids in the Kitchen. Volunteers play an active role in supporting children as they make friends, develop skills and build their confidence.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 14 years of age and in Grade 9 or above
  • Experience working with children is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of program topic is an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall

Children's Pro D Day Camps

Come play with us! During our Pro D Day camps, volunteers assist leaders in supporting children ages 5-7 or 8-10 years in a variety of activities throughout the day including Sports Hall games, crafts, and nature walks. Pro D Day Camps take place on most district-wide professional development days for School District 43.  

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age
  • Previous experience working with children ages 5-10
  • Knowledge of children’s games and activities
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)
  • High Five certification is an asset

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall

Children's Day Camps

Come play with us! During our Jr. Explorers (ages 5-7) and Explorers (ages 8-10) day camps, volunteers assist staff and children as they explore trails around Hyde Creek, play games and activities at local parks and make new friends. Camps focus on teaching life-long skills like creativity and problem-solving. Camps will include swimming, and some Camps may include field trips to local attractions.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age
  • Previous experience working with children ages 5-10
  • Knowledge of children’s games and activities
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)
  • High Five certification is an asset

Seasons: Spring Break, Summer Break, Winter Break

Swim, Play, Pizza Volunteer

It's just as fun as it sounds! Spend Friday evening assisting Children’s Services staff in engaging children ages 7-10 in swimming, sharing pizza and playing in the Children’s centre for some active fun.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age
  • Experience working with children is an asset
  • Ability to swim with confidence
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)
