The City of Edmonton Heritage Collection represents the stories, people and activities of Edmonton. The Heritage Collection has over 60,000 artifacts. They can be found on exhibit at the John Walter Museum, Fort Edmonton Park, on loan to other museums and collections, and in storage at the Artifacts Centre.

Heritage Exhibits Keeper

This position assists the Curators in tracking, caring for, and evaluating artifacts on exhibit. Successful volunteers will also provide quality care and management of the artifacts and assist in presenting them in the best way possible for visitors.

 

Details:

  • Number of positions available: 2 part-time

 

  • Responsibilities: 
    • Work alongside staff to conduct inventory checks of artifacts located in exhibits.

    • Perform dusting and cleaning duties in exhibits to keep artifacts in good condition and looking their best;

    • Assist in carrying out specific portions of the exhibit evaluation processes;

    • Observe and record any issues or opportunities and report them back to the Curators.

 

  • Requirements: 
    • Attention to detail;

    • Legible handwriting;

    • Comfortable in moderately dusty and pollen environments, working indoors and outdoors, and potentially getting dirty.

 

  • Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 shifts per month, with shifts being 4 hours in length.

 

  • Length of Appointment: 6-month appointment from the initial start date. 

Heritage Collection Caretaker

This position assists the Curators in documenting, tracking, caring for and housing artifacts in storage at the Artifacts Centre Facility, as well as providing management of the artifacts and increasing their accessibility. 

 

Details:

  • Number of positions available: 2 part-time

 

  • Responsibilities: 
    • Work alongside staff to conduct inventory checks of artifacts located in exhibits.

    • Perform dusting and cleaning duties in exhibits to keep artifacts in good condition and looking their best;

    • Assist in carrying out specific portions of the exhibit evaluation processes;

    • Observe and record any issues or opportunities and report them back to the Curators.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • If you are accepted as a volunteer with this program, you will be required to attend the City of Edmonton's New Volunteer Orientation
  • As a volunteer with the Artifacts Centre, you will be required to attend an orientation to the Heritage Collection, the City of Edmonton Artifacts Centre, and the exhibit spaces in various locations
    • Other requirements include: 
      • Artifact handling procedures
      • Mid-project review and feedback session
      • Review of a hazard assessment of the volunteer position and safe work practices
      • Review of the Artifacts Centre Facility orientation checklist with a curator
