Youth: Leaders in Training

The Leaders in Training (LIT) program is for youth (ages 13-17) to develop leadership skills and gain valuable volunteering experience while having fun with children. It allows youth to give back to their community and earn leadership or volunteer hours for school too.

A Leader In Training (LIT) volunteers with City of Edmonton recreation leaders to run summer programs for children.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
  • Ages 13-17 years
  • $25 Program Fee
  • Volunteers must attend a registration night in May
  • LITs must attend training in June or July to participate in the program
  • Time Commitment: Minimum of two weeks in July or August

LIT Rookie

1st Year in the Program

Skills you will learn:

  • Behaviour management
  • Risk Management

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 weeks (70hrs)
  • Plan at least 1 activity or craft per week
  • 1 week of Green Shack Playground Program

LIT Junior

2nd Year (or more) in the Program

  • Intermediate Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Resume Building
  • Intermediate Interview Skills
  • Communication & Listening
  • Refereeing Games

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 weeks (70hrs)
  • Plan at least 2 activities or crafts per week
  • Mentor a Rookie LIT

Green Shack Playground
Free, Drop-In Programs
Day Camp
Registered Programs

Each day of the week you will get to be active and experience a variety of arts, games, sports, and free play! All Green Shack programs have different events that happen throughout the summer.
Gain experience working with 6-12-year-olds in a fun and flexible setting! This is your opportunity to share your favourite hobbies and skills.

Work out of a community facility, City facility or City attraction with children ages 3-12 years in a week-long themed program including sports, drama, science and more. Some registered programs also
go on plenty of field trips.

Note: For registered camps, volunteers must be 2 years older than the camp's oldest listed participant age.
Jr. Urban Farmer Junior Naturalist

Volunteer at the Edmonton Valley Zoo Urban Farm. Volunteers help with cleaning and feeding animals in the Urban Farm, and making sure Zoo guests have a positive interaction with the Farm.

Volunteer at the John Janzen Nature Centre to help others learn about nature. Junior Naturalists will work with John Janzen Nature Centre staff to gain leadership skills and help children and youth that drop by the centre to learn more about nature.
