Pleasant Ridge Branch - Tales to Tails
Do you have a therapy dog in your family? Do you and your therapy dog enjoy working with children? The Pleasant Ridge Branch at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library seeks volunteers to serve as Tales to Tails Volunteers. Tales to Tails Volunteers are an important part of our team, providing the opportunity to children to read to certified therapy dogs in the safe environment of the library. But, the dogs don’t do all the work! Volunteers work directly with our young customers to help them improve their reading skills.
Responsibilities: Work with children up to age 18 who are in need of assistance in developing reading skills; act as liaison for personal therapy dog to create a safe environment for both animal and child; encourage continued growth and development in assigned child’s reading skills; advocate for and encourage participation in library activities.
Necessary skills and qualifications: Excellent listening skills; good with children; excellent customer service; patience; former educator a plus.
Requirements: Minimum age 18 years old; Must own a therapy dog certified to serve in Greater Cincinnati; Ability to lift and carry materials; Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and bend; Ability to read, write, talk, see, sit, problem solve, and reason; Completed application; Interview; Background check (if over 18 years old).
Time Required: 1-2 hour/week
Commitment Length Required: long-term (min. 4-12 months)
Schedule: Tuesdays – 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and Saturdays – 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
