Elementary School Programs:
Bridges
Volunteers support elementary students who are English learners, encouraging conversation and cultural exchange.
Grandreaders
Volunteers read weekly with assigned 2nd graders, building literacy skills and relationships through shared books.
In-Class Support
Volunteers assist students one-on-one or in small groups with subjects like reading, math, and science.
Reader’s Theater
Students in grades 2–5 bring stories to life using expressive reading—no costumes or props needed.
SHARE (Students Help and Reach Elders)
Students and older adults connect weekly through conversation, crafts, games, and music at assisted living and adult day programs.
Middle and High School Programs
Dialogues Across the Ages
Students and active older adults connect through weekly discussions on current events and social studies topics, promoting mutual understanding and respect.
Virtual Book Club
Students and volunteers explore literature together in a welcoming online setting. Includes group discussion, reflection, and SSL hour eligibility.

Seasonal Programs
Read Across America
During National Read Across America Week (March), volunteers help K–3 students build reading skills at local libraries.
Reading Buddies
In this summer program, K–3 students read books of their choice with older adult volunteers at public libraries.
Opening Minds Through Art (OMA)
Adult and youth volunteers support adults with early-stage memory loss as they create abstract art, fostering connection through creativity.
L'Chaim ("to life") Chorale Intergenerational Chorus
Come join the L'Chaim ("to life") Chorale and make joyful music across the generations! Students and adults are invited to join members of the JCA's Kensington Clubs, a social day program for older adults with early-stage memory loss, to learn songs from a variety of genres including musical theater, spirituals and Jewish music and perform.
*Singers from all background welcome
*No experience or audition necessary
*SSL hours granted
Rehearsals are Sundays, October 11 through November 15 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm. The Final Performance will be on November 22. Rehearsals and performance will be held at Ring House, 1801 E Jefferson St., Rockville, 20852. If you are interested, please contact Teri Poux at Tpoux@jssa.org.
