Volunteering with Alberta Health Services (AHS) is a unique opportunity to support Patient and Family Centred Care.

 

AHS volunteers are individuals looking for a rewarding opportunity to share not only their time but provide meaningful support to patients and their families through a variety of roles.  Volunteers are a vital link in the important work of Alberta Health Services.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEER?

Accessing health care can often be an overwhelming and stressful experience.  Volunteers provide assistance to patients and their families in a variety of roles throughout a patient’s healthcare journey.  The majority of roles include direct patient support, requiring volunteers to be non-judgmental and adhere to AHS’s confidentiality standards. 

What are the qualities of a Volunteer?

 

If you intend to volunteer with Northern Light Regional Centre, please consider whether or not you have an interest and ability in:

  • Being able to work collaboratively with health care providers to improve care and experiences for patients/residents and their families throughout Alberta
  • Having a strong desire to help others
  • Being a compassionate listener
  • Having an ability to show respect for the perspectives of others
  • Having an ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Having a willingness to give your time on a weekly basis for a minimum of six months.

Before you commit to volunteer service, it is important to think about:

  • Your existing commitments and responsibilities
  • Your skills, experience, interests and availability
  • Your objectives-will this opportunity give you what you are looking for?
  • Are you able to work collaboratively to improve the experience of Clients and residents and their families?
  • Are you willing and able to give your time on a consistent basis for a minimum of 6 months?

Step I:

1: Click the [Fill in an Application] button on the right-hand side of this page and complete an application form.

 

Step 2:

2: Volunteer Resources will review your information and be in contact with you to arrange a 1:1 chat to learn more about your interests and availability. This will also give you an opportunity to get your questions answered. And learn more about our volunteer opportunities. You will be asked to supply two (2) references.

 

Step 3:

3: If it is agreed that volunteering with AHS is something that you would like to pursue, you will be asked to complete our volunteer onboarding process including:

  • Completing a Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screen if required)
  • Completing a Communicable Disease Assessment Form
  • Participating in Confidentiality and Privacy Training, including signing the AHS’s Confidentiality Form
  • Signing a photo and media consent form

 

Step 4:

4: Orientations: AHS online orientation (Once orientation is completed a certificate would be issued) and VR Orientation: (Learn more about AHS code of conduct, safety and Learn how to use our volunteering system, how to sign up for opportunities/ shifts and how to enter your volunteer hours via our kiosk. This can occur during or after onboarding is complete.

 

Before you are considered for any position you have to have gone through the application process, interview and orientation with VR.

 

 

SOME VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Information and Way finders:

  • Volunteers help by taking each visitors and Residents to their final destinations.

 

 One to One Visitation:

  • Help to relieve loneliness by spending time interacting with residents and engaging in conversations, games, or taking them for walks or wheelchair rides.

 

Meal Time Assistance:

  • Assist residents with their breakfast, lunch or supper. Being a pleasant companion.

 

Recreation Activities:   

  • Help residents enjoy a variety of fun activities such as bingo, Craft corner, culture Club, Reminiscing, baking, music program, beauty club, Yoga, fun and fitness activities.

 

Pet Visits:

 

  • Pet Therapy is designed to meet the social needs of Clients and residents.  The local PAWs for People (Pet And Wellness Program) volunteers visit with Clients and residents with dogs and cats in our facility.

Chapel:

  • Volunteers assist on Sundays to by brining residents down for the service in the chapel;
  • Join our Choir and share your gift of music.

Palliative Care: 

  • After special training, volunteers in the Palliative Care Unit provide a special human touch to patients and families living and coping with terminal illness.

Surveys:

  • Volunteers assist with Surveys, by asking 1:1 questions to residents within the Centre or who have checked out to ensure we maintain a better standard and are listening to a patients a recommendations.
