Book Cart Volunteer
Purpose:
To provide patients with recreational activities such as reading and conversation to create an atmosphere of wellbeing and to aid recovery.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- At the start of the shift, prepare and organize the bookcart for distribution at the Wellness Centre
- Circulate inpatient units with bookcart and distribute reading material to patients or family members
- If time allows, visit and read to patients
- React appropriately to the patient’s behaviors and recognize when to seek assistance from staff
- At the end of the shift, conduct inventory of leftover reading materials
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, with superior communication skills on sensitive and/ or confidential issues
- Ability to walk long distances and push/pull a 45 kg cart
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision and/or able to work as part of a team
- Possess confidence, maturity and able to take appropriate initiative while working within assignment
- True commitment towards helping others in the spirit of volunteerism
Scheduling & Commitment:
- Volunteers must commit to one shift per week for a minimum of 1 year
- Shifts are scheduled morning, afternoons, and evenings
