Book Cart Volunteer

Purpose:

To provide patients with recreational activities such as reading and conversation to create an atmosphere of wellbeing and to aid recovery.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • At the start of the shift, prepare and organize the bookcart for distribution at the Wellness Centre
  • Circulate inpatient units with bookcart and distribute reading material to patients or family members
  • If time allows, visit and read to patients
  • React appropriately to the patient’s behaviors and recognize when to seek assistance from staff
  • At the end of the shift, conduct inventory of leftover reading materials

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, with superior communication skills on sensitive and/ or confidential issues
  • Ability to walk long distances and push/pull a 45 kg cart
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and/or able to work as part of a team
  • Possess confidence, maturity and able to take appropriate initiative while working within assignment
  • True commitment towards helping others in the spirit of volunteerism

Scheduling & Commitment: 

  • Volunteers must commit to one shift per week for a minimum of 1 year
  • Shifts are scheduled morning, afternoons, and evenings
