Rockwood Library: Chess Program Facilitator
Enjoy playing chess? Chess Program Facilitators create a welcoming environment where tweens and teens can practice, learn and connect through chess at the Rockwood Library.
Location: Rockwood Library, 17917 SE Stark Street, Portland, OR 97233
Time commitment: 1.5 hours per month. Meetings are once a month, beginning in September. Scheduling is flexible based on volunteer availability.
Age requirement: 18+
Tasks and responsibilities
- Set up meeting room space in advance
- Welcome patrons to the group
- Help patrons with chess questions and strategy
- Facilitate conversations and collaboration among attendees
- Bring in library staff for support, if needed
- Clean up after program is over
Skills and qualifications
- Advanced experience playing chess desired
- Experience working with kids, teens, and adults
- Be patient with novice chess players
- Enjoy teaching people new skills
- Good communication skills and ability to work independently
- Enjoy working with people from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds
- Excellent customer service skills
- Age 18 or older
- Ability to pass a criminal record check. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering.
- Ability to fluently speak English

Training and other requirements
- A volunteer application must be completed before becoming a volunteer.
- Complete online training modules.
- Review all volunteer policies and procedures.
- Attend on-site orientation and tour of the library where you’re volunteering.
- Wear your name badge while volunteering.
- Communicate with staff when you aren’t able to volunteer.
- Log how much time you spent volunteering every volunteer shift.
