Operations Center: Outreach Assistant (age 18+)
Join us for hands-on volunteering at our Operations Center! Want to share your skills with the library’s community programs that serve kids and families outside library buildings? Your role includes preparing kits and packages of materials, labeling and shelving books, and assist with other tasks as needed. Help us extend the reach of our library services and contribute to the diverse needs of our community.
Time Commitment
- 2 hours per week for 3 - 6 months
- Volunteer shifts between 8am-4pm
- Shift availability on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday
Location: Library Operations Center, 221 NE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97230
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Add stickers to books for various programs
- Assemble craft kits
- Shelve and shift collections
- Repair and recondition materials
- Collate and organize materials for classes and storytimes
- Package and prepare materials to be mailed or delivered
- Assist with other tasks as needed
Special Skills & Qualifications
- Age 18+
- Willing to do repetitive tasks
- Ability to stand, lift, reach, twist, bend and push a book cart.
- Ability to lift cardboard boxes of books up to 30 lbs
- Manual dexterity to peel and apply stickers to uncatalogued materials
- Ability to work independently once trained
- Ability to make decisions based on instructions and procedures
- Ability to read and write clearly in English
- Ability to fluently speak English
- Volunteers will need need to visit the the Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, to have their picture taken and pick up a library badge

Training and other requirements
- A volunteer application must be completed before becoming a volunteer.
- Complete online training modules.
- Review all volunteer policies and procedures.
- Attend on-site orientation and tour of the Library Operations Center
- Wear your name badge while volunteering.
- Log time spent volunteering every shift.
- Communicate with staff when you aren’t able to volunteer.
