Northwest Library: Storytime Assistant (age 16+)
Become a Storytime Assistant! Volunteers help the storytime presenter with greeting parents and children for storytime, making nametags and monitoring the door to make sure group size does not exceed occupancy limits. Other duties may include: assisting with storytime set-up and cleaning toys. Volunteers don’t lead storytimes or read books to patrons.
Available shifts:
Thursdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Saturdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Time Commitment: Weekly, for a minimum of 3 months
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Assist with preparing the room for storytime
- Welcome children and adults to storytime
- Make name tags
- Participate in storytime and model activities to adults
- Hand out books and props during the program
- Assist staff with attendees as needed
- Clean toys used during Storytime
- Assist with craft preparation
Skills and Qualifications
- Reliability and ability to commit to volunteering every week
- Welcoming & respectful of people from all cultures, backgrounds, and types of families
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to an unstructured environment
- Ability to get up and down from the floor
- Strong interpersonal skills

Minimum 16 years or older
- Ability to pass a criminal record check. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering.
- Ability to fluently speak English

Training and Other Requirements
- Potential volunteers should attend storytimes first to get a feel for the program
- A volunteer application must be completed before becoming a volunteer
- Complete online training modules
- Review all volunteer policies and procedures
- Wear your volunteer badge and fill out a timesheet every time you volunteer
- Training and support will be provided by storytime providers
- Communicate with staff when you aren’t able to volunteer.
