Burn Scar Recovery Squad
This volunteer opportunity directly supports the Park Ranger Program in advancing conservation objectives aligned with the Multiple Species Conservation Program in recently burned areas.

Volunteers will work alongside ranger staff supporting the natural recovery of the June and August 2026 Sorrento Fire scars.

Habitats in recently burned areas are vulnerable to trampling and erosion as they regrow from seed and perennial roots, and many trails need repair after the Fire Department's emergency response activity. This project will help protect these sensitive spaces, delineating authorized trail corridors and mitigating erosion concerns while targeting invasive species for removal to promote long-term improved biodiversity and fire resiliency. Enhancing the initial recovery and transitioning into ongoing maintenance of our trails and open space habitats in these fire sites allows our native wildlife systems to flourish. These efforts also ensure that our human communities can continue to enjoy access to green spaces—spaces that foster well-being, encourage deep breathing, and nurture a meaningful connection to the land and the natural world to which we all belong.

Location
Vereda Sol Del Dios Trailhead (32.91526, -117.2159), Gablewood Trailhead (32.92762, -117.1911), or Manorgate Trailhead (32.92031, -117.2096) in the northwestern portion of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Check with Ranger Melanie for the location of a specific project occurrences.

Duties Include
- Installing protective perimeter fencing & signage
- Implementing erosion control measures
- Removal of invasive species
- Litter removal
- Broadcasting native seed

*Please note
- Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, work gloves and appropriate, comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting ripped or dirty. 
- Bring drinking water, hat, sunscreen and bandana, neck gaiter, or mask as the location is outdoors in full sun and prone to wind-blown dust and ash.
- Check-in is required prior to starting your duty.
- All events are scheduled to take place outdoors and may be subject to cancellation in the event of rain, excessive heat, or other adverse weather conditions.
