Date & Time: October 8th, 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

As winter approaches, the time has come to put our medicine garden, miskinâhk kistikân, to bed for the winter. The main tasks we'll be focusing on are:

  • Planting a few new shrubs
  • Burlap wrap shrubs to prevent winter browsing from ungulates
  • Remove excess grass from around shrubs
  • Remove terracotta watering pots from ground
  • Empty the watering containers
  • Install one sign on the river viewpoint

This event is open to all volunteers.

Accessibility:

  • Walking will be minimal at this event, though the surface of the medicine garden is very uneven due to pocket gopher activity.
  • This event will involve bending to complete tasks as well as some digging.
  • There will not be toilet facilities available for this event.

What to Expect:

  • We will start the day promptly at 10:00 am with a safety and training meeting to go over our tasks and the associated hazards and safety controls. We will break for lunch around 12:00 pm and head out by 2:30 pm.
  • Plan to carry your personal supplies for the day (water, layers, snacks, etc.) in your backpack.
  • There are no washroom facilities on this land, we find privacy behind a tree.

What to Wear and Bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and outerwear for working outdoors all day, including long pants and layers appropriate for the weather.
  • Hiking shoes or sturdy running shoes – no slip-on shoes please!
  • Lunch and water, and a backpack to carry them.
  • All tools and supplies will be provided but you may bring your own work gloves if you wish.
  • Optional:
