Pipestone Creek Conservation Land overlooks the meandering creek as well as an oxbow lake. It supports moose, deer, and many other types of wildlife, and is frequented by visitors who enjoy the peaceful scenery. Join us at our Pipestone Creek to remove invasive plants from the trails and surrounding areas to provide the best environment possible for native plants and wildlife to flourish!

This event will include a Bioblitz in the later portion of the day, which will be conducted with local ecology professionals. We will survey the land and identify species, and staff will share about the ecology of Pipestone Creek. 

Accessibility: 

This event will involve

• Bending and kneeling to pull plants up, carrying tools and supplies for the day

• Roughly 6 km of walking over variable terrain, including going up and down one steep hill

What to Expect:

• We will start the day promptly at 9 AM with a safety and training meeting to go over our tasks and the associated hazards and safety controls. We will break for lunch around 11 AM and then continue with the Bioblitz. We will be finished by 2:00 PM.

• We will hike out to invasive plant patches to remove common tansy and tall buttercup. 
• The Bioblitz will separate people into groups depending on their interest of flora and fauna.
• To participate in the bioblitz, we recommend downloading the app iNaturalist and joining the project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/bioblitz-at-pipestone-creek-conservation-land 
  • Instead of using the app, you can bring a camera and then share photos with EALT after the event. Photos will be added to the project from both staff and participants from the day. 

• There are no washroom facilities on this land, we find privacy behind a tree.

What to Wear and Bring:

• Comfortable clothing and outerwear for working outdoors all day, including long pants and layers appropriate for the weather. 
• Hiking shoes or sturdy running shoes – no slip-on shoes.
• Hot weather: Sunscreen, hat, insect repellent.

• Lunch and water, and a backpack to carry them.

• All tools and supplies will be provided but you may bring your own work gloves if you wish. 

• Optional:

• Cushion to sit on at lunch
• Binoculars
• Camera
• Field Guides, containers or bug nets for bioblitz

Parking and how to get there:

• Follow this link, or search for: Pipestone Creek Conservation Lands in Google maps.
• An EALT sign will mark the land. Please park where directed roadside/in the ditch.

Cancellations:

• If you need to cancel, please do so through the Volunteer Portal as soon as possible. 
• If you have any questions or need to cancel on the day of the event, you can reach Conservation Coordinator Kayleen at 825-767-2047. Please note that we will NOT have access to email on the day of the event. 

Additional Information:

• Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.

• Please contact us in advance if you wish to bring a minor to this event.

• Due to roadside parking, we recommend carpooling with volunteers if you are comfortable - please review our Carpooling Policy here. After reviewing, please contact the event coordinator and we will set up a method to message other event participants.
