Join us at Golden Ranches to remove barbed wire which is hazardous to wildlife.

Golden Ranches is located in the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The grasslands of Golden Ranches provide habitat for ground nesting birds, and the forested areas provide cover for large mammals. The Golden Ranches site includes nearly 8 kilometres of North Cooking Lake shoreline.

Accessibility: 

• Anticipate a generally high level of physical exertion for this event.
• Approximately 5km of walking on flat terrain, with some bushwhacking.

What to Expect:

• We will start the day promptly at 10:00am with a safety and training meeting to go over our tasks and the associated hazards and safety controls. 
• Removing stretches of downed barbed wire.      
• Plan to carry your personal supplies for the day (water, layers, snacks, etc.) in your backpack.
• There are no washroom facilities on this land, we find privacy behind a tree.

What to Wear and Bring:

• Comfortable clothing and outerwear for working outdoors all day, including long pants and layers appropriate for the weather. 
• Hiking shoes or sturdy running shoes – no slip-on shoes. Rubber boots if the conditions are wet.

• Lunch and water, and a backpack to carry them.

• All tools and supplies will be provided but you may bring your own work gloves if you wish. 

• Optional:

• Cushion to sit on at lunch
• Binoculars
• Camera

Parking and how to get there:

• Follow this link or search for: Golden Ranches in Google maps.
• An EALT sign will mark the access point at Range Road 205/Township Road 515A.
• There is no designated parking area. Roadside parking is available subject to the Alberta Traffic Safety Act and local bylaws - there must be clear space for the passage of other vehicles and a clear view of the parked vehicle for 60 metres in each direction.

Cancellations:

• If you need to cancel, please do so through the Volunteer Portal as soon as possible.

Additional Information:

• Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.

• Please contact us in advance if you wish to bring a minor to this event. Minors are not allowed at this event.

• If you wish to carpool with another volunteer, please review our Carpooling Policy here. After reviewing, please contact the event coordinator and we will set up a method to message other event participants.
