Volunteer Arts and Museum Attendant
POSITION OBJECTIVES
- Assist in the arts & museum daily frontline operations
- Provide information relating to exhibitions and associated programs
- Ensure the safety and security of visitors and objects
- Engage visitors with warmth and assist with accessibility
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adhere to Council policies at all times, including the Code of Conduct and Volunteer Policy
- Attend an initial induction and any other training to meet obligations including exhibition briefings
- Demonstrate the organisation’s vision and values through workplace behaviour, actions and attitudes
- Encourage visitors to complete surveys, complete the visitor book and take relevant cultural services collateral - assisting them where possible to do so
- Provide a courteous, comprehensive and efficient information service to visitors
- Assist in the presentation of the museum/gallery public spaces to the highest standards
- Maintain vigilance and enforce regulations governing the protection and security of visitors, staff and objects
- Answer questions and provide commentaries on a changing programme of exhibitions to spark visitors’ memories and imagination
- Interact with arts & museum visitors in a responsive and professional manner that reflects positively on council
- Relay any messages or requests and report any incidents or issues to visitor experience officer on shift
- Work cooperatively with other volunteers and staff as required
- Assist museum/gallery staff as required
- Adhere to Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures
- Keep all necessary licenses up-to-date and inform Operations Support Officer of any changes to licenses that will impact the delivery of service
COMMITMENT AND SCHEDULE
- Flexible days and times available subject to a three month probationary period for new volunteers
- A minimum of at least one shift per fortnight for ongoing roles, or for temporary roles a minimum of at least one shift per week
- If unable to attend, advise staff as early as possible so that a replacement volunteer can be arranged.
LICENCES
- NSW Class C driver’s licence
- Working with Children Check
- A Police Check may be requested
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience in gallery / museum / retail or customer service environment
- Reliable and punctual
- Good verbal, written and numeracy skills
- Communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work alone and with other volunteers and staff
- Courteous towards staff, customers and other volunteers
- An appreciation for cultural diversity and an ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
