Do you love our local plants and wildlife? Are you passionate about helping others discover and care for our natural environment? If so, why not become a Gardens for Wildlife Volunteer Garden Guide with Mornington Peninsula Shire?
The Gardens for Wildlife program is run in partnership with dedicated volunteers who are passionate about protecting our local environment and committed to supporting and educating others in wildlife gardening.
Volunteer Garden Guides will visit home gardens to inspire residents to create wildlife-friendly spaces. Through these visits, they help residents discover how their gardens can support the unique flora and fauna of the Mornington Peninsula.
This is achieved by:
- Visiting gardens of new program members
- Provide wildlife gardening recommendations and advice
- Provide examples of success that inspire others
- Complete a recommendation Garden Report for the resident following the garden visit
- Mentoring new volunteers
- Attending ongoing educational field trips and network meetings.
- Garden visits can occur on any day of the week as well as on the weekend if that works better for you.
- New Garden Guides will buddy up with an existing guide to learn the Gardens for Wildlife role
If you have interest and/or knowledge on wildlife gardening that you would like to share with others, consider becoming a volunteer Gardens for Wildlife Garden Guide. Wildlife gardening and local plant identification training is provided but we do prefer our Garden Guides to be passionate about these topics to help protect our local critters!
The Shire’s Gardens for Wildlife program is based at The Briars in Mount Martha and the gardens you will visit are located Peninsula wide.
The time commitment is 8-10 hours per month which includes 2 Garden Visits and the preparation of 2 Garden Reports.
Hear from one of our volunteers “Volunteering has always been part of my family life. Joining the Gardens for Wildlife team has given me the pleasure of passing on knowledge, working with a great group of passionate people and the wonderment on faces as they gain a connection with nature. Then seeing habitats in gardens improve and wildlife return is the icing on the cake. We live in an amazing place and being part of a growing community trying to protect it is inspiring and energising.”
Volunteers must be willing to access various technological platforms including Microsoft Teams and My Impact, our Volunteer Management Platform as well as writing reports.
