Docent in the Humane Education Department

Position and Department

Docent in the Humane Education Department

Job Description

Imagine this: you're a superhero, spreading the word about respecting animals to kids of all ages! No cape needed, just a warm heart and a passion for furry (and feathered, and scaly) friends.

This volunteer gig at the SPCA is all about empowering the next generation to build empathetic relationships with animals, from cuddly cats to beautiful bunnies to the residents of the farm.

Every program you help with is a step towards creating a more compassionate Erie County. You'll be shaping young minds, fostering respect for all living things, and maybe even inspiring the next generation of veterinarians, environmentalists, or animal shelter staff!

P.S. Bonus points for knowing some fun animal facts or being able to do a convincing cat purr. We live for that kind of awesomeness!

Commitment

This volunteer opportunity has a lot of scheduling flexibility to make it super convenient for you to join our team! You can easily sign up for shifts through Sign-Up Genius, and we're always adapting to the seasons to meet our program needs. There are some fantastic opportunities waiting for you, like Tale for Two on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Scout workshops and Saturday Academy on Saturdays, and there are also summer camp options!

These opportunities are constantly evolving with the seasons, so you'll always have something new and exciting to explore! Plus, you'll get to be part of an amazing team of animal lovers who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them!

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Think of it like being a rockstar guide for groups of up to 25 curious kids and adults, exploring the fascinating world of animals together. You'll answer burning questions about the SPCA and furry friends of all shapes and sizes. Plus, safety's your superpower, so you'll keep everyone feeling happy and secure around education animals.

Unleash your inner classroom wizard as you help set up and tidy up the learning space, gather materials for epic adventures, and welcome all participants with a big grin. We're talking sign-ins, fee collection, and all the behind-the-scenes magic that makes these programs happen.

Now, let's ignite your creativity! You'll help kids release their artistic talents with art projects and educational games. Think colorful animal creations, eco-friendly activities, and more!

Remember, a positive attitude is crucial! You'll be cheering on these young explorers, building lasting relationships, and inspiring them to become lifelong animal advocates. It's all about spreading the love for furry (and feathered, and scaly!) friends while making learning an absolute blast!

So, if you're a natural leader with a passion for animals and a knack for fun, come join our incredible team! We can't wait to welcome you to the world of humane education and make a difference together.

Every rescue, every adoption, every happy bark, purr, and squeak – that's what drives us here at the SPCA. We all share the same values and goals and believe that every volunteer should feel the same! Everyone’s help makes a difference for animals!

Requirements

  • Ready to inspire the next generation? This volunteer opportunity is all about connecting with young minds, so we ask that you be at least 18 years old and willing to complete a background check so we can ensure a safe and enriching experience for everyone involved
  • Teaching superpowers welcome, but not required! If you've got classroom experience, that's terrific! You'll bring valuable skills to the table. But fear not, new faces are always welcome here! We're passionate about sharing our knowledge and guiding everyone on this journey of animal love and understanding!
  • You’ll also sprinkle kindness everywhere you go – it’s part of our mission! From animals and guests to volunteers and staff, your exceptional warmth will make a difference.
  • Let’s be an awesome team – your willingness to work with and respectfully communicate with our fantastic staff and volunteers is the key to success!
