Canine Enrichment Volunteer Level 1 in the Behavior Department
Job Description
Want to give shelter dogs the best experience possible? We are looking for dedicated Canine Enrichment Volunteers to join our team! As a Canine Enrichment Volunteer, you will play a vital role in enhancing our shelter dogs' physical and mental well-being through structured activities, training, socialization, and play. This hands-on position is ideal for dog lovers who want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of dogs waiting for their new homes.
Volunteers in this role can advance to higher levels within the department, gaining more hands-on experience with dogs as they meet the necessary requirements, including training and walking.
Commitment
Three to four hours a week, same day each week. Multiple shifts may be available if interested.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Engage shelter dogs in enrichment activities such as interactive play, sensory exercises, puzzle feeding, clicker training, and assisting with our Click for Quiet program
- Prepare enrichment items to keep dogs stimulated and reduce stress
- Provide socialization to dogs in their kennel
- Monitor and report behavioral observations to the Behavior Team for tracking each dog’s progress
- Appropriate record keeping
- Work with the public and potential adopters and facilitate adoption matching
- Cleaning kennels and keeping adoption areas tidy
- Follow all SPCA safety protocols and procedures
Requirements
- Comfortable working with dogs of all sizes and temperaments
- Patience and consistency, as well as a positive attitude working with dogs
- Being a team player and enjoying working with the public
- Comfortable working with volunteer groups on occasion
- Ability to follow shelter safety protocols
- Prior experience handling or training dogs (preferred but not required!)
- Must be 18 years or older and out of high school
