Each year the National Association of Letter Carriers hold the largest one-day food drive. It is always the 2nd Saturday in May. The carriers distribute bags to each residential household. On the day of the drive, the letter carriers will collect food that residents have placed near their mailbox.
The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps will have volunteers working at the Canton and Plymouth Main Post Offices on the day of the drive to assist the carriers with unloading the donations from their vehicles. We also do a quick pre-sort of canned/bagged/boxed/glass items into large collection bins and load them onto semi-trailers to be delivered to our office in Plymouth. A group of volunteers is also needed at our building in Plymouth to assist with unloading the food from the trucks and getting it into the gym - with the assistance of a hi-lo and pallet jacks.
After the drive is over, we have volunteers that go through all of the donations item by item to make sure it is not expired/damaged and micro-sort so that the food can be distributed through our community food pantry.
