How You Will Make a Difference

Help local students in grades K-8 reach academic success and foster their ability to succeed in school.  Watch their confidence build as they master their homework at the Library.

Typical day/task

• Coach students in a range of subjects - reading, writing, math, social studies, and science
• Coach students in groups of one to three
• Support students as-needed to help them complete their homework. This may include redirecting focus, answering basic questions, using the library collection for additional activities to reaffirm learning, or looking up concepts using library resources
• Assist with administrative tasks such as record keeping

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in SJSU's ChAD 60 and have received instruction from Marsha to complete this step
• Complete Homework Coach Volunteer Training
• Experience or interest working with youth
• Strong oral communication skills a must
• Dependable, patient, and flexible
• Second language ability in Spanish a plus, but not required
• Fingerprint clearance required for volunteers age 18 and over

Commitment:

• ChAD 60 Homework Coaches need to commit to a Tuesday or Thursday set schedule. Volunteers choose a 90 minute block between 3pm-6pm to host their coaching sessions. Coaches need to commit to 10 x 90m sessions (may double up on some sessions if coordinated ahead of time with Marsha)
