Current Volunteer Opportunities - Step Up to Better Health-Walking Group Volunteer

Step-Up for Better Health is an monthly wellness program for adults living with Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or those at risk of developing diabetes. Each session begins at 44 Francis Street South with a health education discussion focused on diabetes self-management, followed by a group walk in Victoria Park. Participants have the option to engage in traditional walking or Nordic pole walking in a friendly, inclusive environment. The program encourages healthy eating, physical activity, and social connection to support long-term lifestyle changes.

 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Volunteers works alongside staff to help create a welcoming, safe, and supportive experience for participants. This role involves encouraging social engagement, monitoring group safety, and providing general assistance throughout the walking component of the session.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greet and engage participants at 44 Francis Street South and throughout the walk.
  • Along with a staff, walk with participants to and from Victoria Park.
  • Encourage friendly conversation and help build a sense of connection among group members.
  • Support staff with snack and water distribution.
  • Assist with informal headcounts to ensure the group stays together.
  • Be alert to tripping hazards, mobility challenges, or participants who may need extra support.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and respect participant privacy at all times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain healthy boundaries with participants.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging group atmosphere.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Friendly, approachable, and comfortable interacting with adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Able to walk outdoors for up to one hour and assist with light tasks.
  • Observant and responsive to group needs and safety.
  • Reliable and punctual across all 8 weekly sessions.
  • Committed to upholding privacy, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
  • Values equity, inclusion, and community support.
  • Speaking a second language is an asset.
  • Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.

 

SUPERVISION

  1. Each Volunteer will be assigned a staff supervisor. The staff supervisor is someone who is the lead and connected to the program.
  2. The staff supervisor or a designated staff will be available (either in person or by phone) if a question or issue arises.
  3. The Volunteer is also encouraged to connect with the staff supervisor at any time to discuss an idea or issue as they arise.

 

ORIENTATION/TRAINING

  1. Complete the CHCKW Volunteer Application Form.
  2. Volunteers are required to submit the following before beginning their position: Vulnerable Sector Police Check , Proof of Covid-19 Vaccination, 2 References.
  3. Complete Volunteer orientation training modules and read required policies.

 

EVALUATION:

  1. Volunteers receive ongoing performance feedback from their staff supervisor and/or the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers can provide and request feedback as required.
  2. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the annual Volunteer Experience Survey.

 

TIME COMMITMENT, REQUIRED HOURS & LOCATION

Time Commitment: May-August 2026 

Required Hours: Tuesdays, once a month from 10:00 am-12:00 pm

Location: 44 Francis Street South, Kitchener
