IN THE LIBRARY - Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB)
Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB) members partner with library staff to help shape teen services at Palo Alto City Library. Teens in grades 8–12 collaborate to share ideas, support programs, and build community while gaining leadership experience. TLAB members serve as library ambassadors—advising on teen collections, spaces, and services, while helping plan and participate in programs and outreach that connect teens to library resources and events.
This role is ideal for teens who want to make a difference in their community, develop leadership skills, and connect with other teens in a welcoming and creative environment.
Responsibilities:
- Attend and actively participate in monthly TLAB meetings
- Collaborate with peers and staff to develop ideas for teen programs, services, and spaces
- Support library programs and community outreach events
- Contribute to at least one project each semester (such as program planning, booklists, or program support)
- Serve as a positive representative of the library and engage with other teens
- Track volunteer hours and assignments using the library’s volunteer system
Qualifications:
- Current student in grades 8–12 (rising 8th graders welcome during summer)
- Interest in leadership, community engagement, and library services
- Ability to work collaboratively with peers and library staff
- Reliable and able to commit to regular participation
- Willingness to follow library policies and contribute to an inclusive, respectful environment
- No prior volunteer experience required — training is provided
Commitment:
- Participation is semester-based (Fall: September–December; Winter/Spring: January–May; Summer: June–August)
- Attend at least 50% of scheduled meetings each semester
- Complete at least one volunteer activity or project per semester
- Maintain active participation and communication to remain in good standing
- Flexible opportunities available, with consistency encouraged
