Gardening Assistant at Whitehall Historic House
Help History Bloom at Whitehall!
Whitehall Historic House is a stunning Grade II* listed timber-framed building in the heart of Cheam Village. Dating back to around 1500, this unique house has been a home to many families over five centuries—most notably the Lumleys and the Killicks.
The garden at Whitehall is a peaceful oasis that complements the house’s rich Tudor, Stuart, and Victorian heritage. It serves as a vital space for community events, education, and relaxation. We are looking for passionate volunteers to help us maintain this historic green space, ensuring it remains a beautiful backdrop for the stories we tell and a welcoming environment for our visitors.
Main Tasks
We are looking for volunteers to assist in the seasonal upkeep and maintenance of the Whitehall garden. Your work will ensure the grounds are "visitor-ready" and historically sympathetic.
General Maintenance:
- Regular weeding and clearing of flower beds and borders.
- Pruning of shrubs, roses, and climbers at appropriate times of the year.
- Lawn care, including edging and clearing fallen leaves or debris.
- Deadheading flowers to encourage growth and maintaining topiary or potted plants.
- Watering during dry spells and feeding plants as required.
Site-Specific Care:
- Clearing pathways and the patio area to ensure safe access for visitors.
- Keeping the areas around the historic porch and outbuildings tidy.
- Assisting with the planting of period-appropriate perennials and shrubs.
- Bagging up green waste and general tidying of the garden’s hidden corners.
- Minor repairs to garden structures or fencing where necessary.
