Water Vole Recovery Project - Mink Raft Monitoring Training

Training Content: Participants will gain in-depth knowledge about the Water Vole Recovery Project and the critical role of controlling American mink in water vole conservation. The training will involve hands-on activities and cover the following aspects:

  • Species Ecology & Field Signs: Learn about the ecology of water voles, minks and other mammals and how to identify their field signs.
  • Habitat Assessment: Understand what habitat requirements water voles need to thrive.
  • Raft Assembly & Deployment: Hands-on experience in assembling and deploying rafts and clay pads.
  • Traps & Dispatching: Learn the process of setting traps and the necessary procedures for dispatching.
  • Monitoring & Data Entry: Understand the importance of monitoring and data entry using Mink MApp for a unified approach across the country.
  • Health & Safety: Receive comprehensive training on health and safety protocols, including biosecurity measures.

 

Requirements: Everyone who registers must have previously watched the Intro Webinar linked above. You must be comfortable with being responsible for your own safety, the safety of others and animal welfare when participating in this project.

During the training, you must be prepared to engage in outdoor activities. Bring your lunch, water, and appropriate outdoor clothing. Sturdy shoes required but waders will not be needed as we will not be entering the water.
