Volunteer Opportunities

English Conversation Group Facilitator

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitating an English conversation group class for newcomers

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be fluent in English
  • For online classes – experience using Zoom
  • Adult EAL/ESL teaching experience
  • EAL Teacher Certification (e.g., Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language – CTESL) preferred
  • Other teaching experience will be considered
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must have strong time management and organization skills
  • Patience

Location

  • Online classes take place via Zoom
    In-person classes take place at the Immigrant Centre 

Time Commitment Required

  • 2 hours weekly for three months
  • Classes are scheduled Mondays to Thursdays (morning, afternoon, and evening), and Fridays and Saturdays (morning and afternoon)
  • Must be available consistently on the same day and time each week

Cooking & Nutrition Class Assistant

Program Overview

Cooking and Nutrition Classes are offered in sessions of eight weekly classes. Each session includes one class per week, focusing on teaching and demonstrating the following:

  • Healthy, low-cost “Canadian-style” meals
  • Food safety practices
  • Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide
  • How to read and understand nutrition labels on packaged foods
  • Grocery shopping on a budget (includes one class held at the grocery store)

Duties and Responsibilities

Preparation

  • Review the weekly class agenda (sent via email) to understand the schedule, topics, and recipes.

In-Class Assistance

  • Help with recipe preparation
  • Support delivery of class content
  • Assist with clean-up between topics and recipes

Clean-up

  • Work with clients and volunteers to:
  • Wash, sanitize, dry, and store dishes
  • Store leftover perishable foods safely
  • Ensure food is equally portioned for clients to take home
  • Clean countertops and kitchen surfaces

Qualifications and Skills

  • Interest and familiarity with Canadian-style cooking, including vegetarian options; experience with ethnic foods is beneficial
  • Ability to lead small groups
  • Patient, warm, open-minded, and enthusiastic personality required
  • Basic healthy eating knowledge

Location

  • Classes take place at the Immigrant Centre 

Time Commitment Required

  • Approximately three hours weekly, including set-up and clean-up
  • Arrival 15 minutes before class start time is required

Skills Gained

  • Volunteering as a Cooking and Nutrition Class Assistant is a rewarding and educational experience that offers hands-on learning—and it looks great on a resume!

English Language Partner

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet online or in person with their Language Partner for informal conversation classes
  • Assist with basic grammar, vocabulary building, and pronunciation
  • Provide encouragement and support
  • Share general information about Winnipeg, e.g. community events, activities, schools, transportation
  • Provide information about Canadian life, culture and customs

Qualifications and Skills

  • Resided in Canada (preferably in Winnipeg) for at least three years
  • Knowledgeable about Winnipeg
  • Fluent in English with minimum CLB of 8 or equivalent
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Patience
  • For online classes - experience using Zoom

Location

  • Online classes take place via Zoom
  • In-person classes take place at the Immigrant Centre or off-site at a public location: e.g. library or coffee shop. Volunteers who want to meet with their partner off-site must provide a Police Record Certificate.

Time Commitment Required

  • 1.5 hours per week
  • Minimum three-month commitment required
  • One meeting per week minimum
  • Shifts available on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays

Translator

Duties and Responsibilities

Verify the accuracy of translated documents such as:

  • Diplomas and certificates
  • Legal documents
  • Medical documents
  • Letters

Qualifications and Skills

  • Fluency in at least two languages, including English
  • Excellent reading, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good time management and organization skills
  • Previous document translation experience is an asset

Time Commitment Required

  • Flexible schedule / work-from-home
