POSITION OVERVIEW
The Fitness Class Instructor Volunteer will lead fun and safe classes for YMCA members on behalf of the YMCA Calgary. All instructors are responsible for keeping up to date with certifications and continuing education credits. Instructors are expected to bring their knowledge and positive attitude to each class they teach. Classes include: Yoga, Zumba, Cardio, Older Adult Fitness, Cycle Fitness, Aquatics Fitness.

 

Age requirement: 18+

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide an impactful experience for members and non-members participating in fitness classes.
  • Maintain a safe environment by following policies and procedures to manage risks associated with participation in programs
  • Ensure safety, communication and a sense of belonging are high priorities
  • Welcome participants, provide instructions on physical distancing & equipment use
  • Arrive 20 minutes prior to class start to set up equipment and remain after class to disinfect equipment, floors and walls that were used
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers
  • Build relationships with the participants, their families and YMCA staff and volunteers
  • Communicate with the Health & Fitness Supervisor/Coordinator regarding any situations during your shift

SKILLS

At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following

  1. Previous experience teaching group fitness classes
  2. Ability to educate participants on the fundamentals of fitness and exercise by leading safe and progressive classes including warm-up and cool down
  3. Accommodate participants of varying ages & abilities by providing modifications for exercises included in program plans
  4. Demonstrate excellent service for participants by being available before & after classes to answer questions and respond to feedback

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid YMCA or AFLCA Group Fitness certification is required
  2. Current CPR C certification (CPR recertified within the last 12 months)
  3. Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search 
  4. Three references – one can be personal reference
  5. Able to attend and complete required YMCA trainings which may be at various YMCA locations
  6. Available evenings and/or weekends if required
