Note: This role has an age requirement of 16 years.
Summary
We are looking for a dedicated volunteer to assist with various tasks during our theatre events. Responsibilities will include ushering, photography (when applicable), and ticket scanning. Additionally, the volunteer will provide excellent customer service by helping audience members with inquiries about the events. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and creative environment while contributing to the smooth operation of our events. Our events include live theatre performances, art showcases, as well as dance and drama class show and shares.
Time Commitment
Commitment requirements: Shifts can be between 2-4 hours, primarily on evenings and weekends, depending on the show. The volunteer is expected to be present at least 30 minutes before the theatre house opens and stay until 15-30 minutes after the show completes to assist with clean up.
We host up to 6 events a season, totaling over 25 performances between ROY and BY
Duties and Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures.
- Ensure the equipment is clean and safe and report damaged equipment to YMCA staff.
- Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers.
- Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift.
- Keep an eye on audience both inside and outside the theatre before, during, and after a performance.
Event Support
- Scanning theatre tickets, using a YMCA-issued iPhone
- Greet guests in a friendly, welcoming manner
- Helping guests find seats safely
- Helping guests find washrooms, concessions, water stations, etc.
- Retain and clearly articulate knowledge about the YMCA Presents Shows and Series to correctly and confidently inform guests when questions arise
Skills:
- Customer service experience with a customer-oriented attitude
- Ability to stand/bend/exert for extended periods of time
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative, be creative, and self-direct
- Engaging and outgoing personality
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Experience engaging and working with diverse groups of people
- Can help lift, move or put away chairs and tables as needed
- Comfortable with using technology such as ticket scanners
- Interest in performing arts of all kinds

Qualifications
- Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
