YMCA Calgary Volunteer Position

Volunteer Title: Assistant Sport Coach or Head Coach

Location: All YMCA Calgary facilities

Reports To: Sport Supervisor, Sport Coordinator

Note: This role has an age requirement of 14+.

Summary

Our Coaches provide positive experiences and promote healthy communities in Calgary by instructing groups of YMCA participants. Our programs provide participants with an opportunity to have a fun and rewarding experience while enjoying Sport in a recreational environment. Instruction and lesson plans will vary between age groups, levels, and abilities. Lesson plans are provided to volunteers.

Time Commitment

This position requires an 8-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are 1-1.25 hours in length and typically scheduled on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Duties and Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  1. Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures
  2. Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers
  3. Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift

Program Support

  1. Provide a positive experience for children/youth in Sport programs
  2. Promote the development of fundamental movement skills by following curriculum objectives and progressive lesson plans
  3. Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
  4. Manage risks associated with participation in programs
  5. Set up and take down equipment needed for your lesson plan

 

Skills

  1. Love for sport, personal development, and community development
  2. Previous sport experience in a coaching or playing aspect
  3. Experience building relationships with youth aged 5-15
  4. Customer service experience with a customer-oriented attitude
  5. Quick to think on your feet to solve problems and de-escalate situations
  6. Ability to stand/bend/exert for extended periods of time
  7. Excellent communication skills
  8. Ability to take initiative, be creative, and self-direct
  9. Engaging and outgoing personality
  10. Capability to work both independently and collaboratively
  11. Experience engaging and working with diverse groups of people

Qualifications

  1. Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
  2. Three references (two professional)
  3. Able to attend and complete required trainings
