POSITION OVERVIEW

 

YMCA Calgary is currently looking for volunteers to join our Climbing Team. As a volunteer, you will provide fun & safe climbing experiences for children and families alongside a certified Climbing Instructor. Previous experience in climbing is not required.

 

Age requirement: 16 years of age and older

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a safe environment by following policies and procedures to manage risks associated with participation in climbing programs
  • Build relationships with the participants, their families and YMCA staff and volunteers
  • Ensure safety, communication and a sense of belonging are high priorities
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers
  • Support the YMCA Climbing Instructor in facilitating quality experiences during registered program and open climb experiences
  • Assist the Climbing Instructor with keeping children engaged in off-wall activities.
  • Support the check-in process required for climbing including online waivers, open climb appointments and sign-in/out systems.
  • Communicate with Day Camps & Climbing Supervisor regarding any situations during your shift

SKILLS
At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following: 

  1. Experience building relationships with children, youth & families
  2. Customer service experience 
  3. Ability to stand for 2 hours
  4. Excellent communication skills
  5. Ability to take initiative, be creative and self-directed
  6. Attention to detail and customer-oriented
  7. Engaging and outgoing personality

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search 
  2. Three references – one can be personal reference
  3. Able to attend and complete required YMCA trainings which may be at various YMCA locations
  4. Available evenings and/or weekends if required
