YMCA Calgary Volunteer Position

Volunteer Title: High School Math Tutor

Location: All YMCA Calgary locations and some community program sites 

Reports To: Tutoring Supervisor, Lead Tutor

Note: This role has an age requirement of 16+ years.


YMCA Calgary is seeking energetic and committed volunteer mathematics tutors interested in helping high school youth in a group tutoring setting. Tutoring Table aims to remove the financial barrier of private tutoring to assist students in passing their registered math programs. Tutoring has been proven to show positive results in terms of helping youth improve their academic achievement, school attendance, and providing a connection to a positive adult. Volunteer tutors serve as guides in the students’ learning, assisting with challenging math concepts and enhancing students’ confidence in problem solving. Volunteers are provided with ongoing training, in both math curriculum and skills in positive youth guidance.


Time Commitment

This position requires an 8-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are 2 hours in length and typically scheduled after school times between 4:00 and 6:30 pm.

Duties and Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  1. Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures
  2. Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers
  3. Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift

Program Support

  1. Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
  2. Manage risks associated with participation in programs
  3. Volunteer tutors should be comfortable:
    • Working with high school youth in a group setting
    • Communicating with and teaching youth struggling in math
    • Engaging in a positive, strengths-based approach

  1. Strong high school math knowledge
  2. Commitment towards teaching and mentoring
  3. Experience working with high school youth in a group setting
  4. Ability to engage with youth using a positive, strengths-based approach


  1. Develop practical leadership skills, teaching, and volunteering experience
  2. Complementary YMCA Calgary membership (after 3-month probation)
  3. Education and professional development opportunities


  1. Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
  2. Three references (two professional)
  3. Able to attend and complete required trainings
  4. Have a strong understanding of high school level math
  5. Experience/interest in mathematics (training and resources will be provided)
  6. Experience working with youth would be considered an asset
  7. Available during the evening hours for the program
