BeTheChangeYYC

BeTheChangeYYC started as a grassroots initiative in Calgary, Alberta in 2015.  We are a registered nonprofit, that in 2022 - 2023, served more than 17,000 individual contacts while providing more than 22% of clients a community referral to help end their cycle of homelessness.

Fun fact: In 2022 we made enough sandwiches to build the Calgary tower 8 times!

Volunteers are the foundation of our organization. We rely on community to power this movement. We believe in ending homelessness, one person at a time. Housing is a Human Right!

Street Outreach Volunteer

Our Street Outreach Team goes out to help those experiencing homelessness in Calgary.  We walk the streets and back alleys of Calgary, on foot, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday from 5pm to 8 pm and every Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.

Our aim is to meet people where they are at by connecting through conversations and providing referrals to help end the cycle of homelessness.  We also hand out essential supplies to support life and wellbeing such as food, water, hygiene items, harm reduction, and clothing.

Sandwich Making Team

Our Sandwhich Making Team gets together to make peanut butter and jam or meat sandwiches (no pork).  Join for music, conversation, good times and a good cause.  Our Street Outreach Teams give out an average of 240 sandwiches each week!

Dates, times and locations for sandwich making vary.  We try to suit the schedules of people who join the team. This is a great opportunity to volunteer occasionally or regularly.  You can also recruit friends, family or coworkers to volunteer with you one time or regularly.

Headquarters Support - Inside HQ

We often need extra hands to help out around Headquarters! Dates, times, and length of shift are flexible. You can help to make kits for street outreach (hygiene, dental, first aid, etc.), to sort donations, organize storage, or clean.

This is a great opportunity to volunteer occasionally or regularly, or to recruit friends, family or co-workers to volunteer with you.

Handy Human

Are you handy?  We need help with random tasks around our Headquarters space.  Please sign up if you would like to receive information about work that needs to be done.  Examples include painting, installing shelves, drywalling, etc.

Headquarters Support - Drivers

Our drivers help by picking up purchases and donations and bringing them to Headquarters.  Some deliveries are regularly scheduled, others are based on donations.  You could sign up for a regular pick-up time or be added to our 'last minute request' contact list and help out as you are able.

This position requires you to have your own vehicle.

Our Mission

Through volunteer power, we provide tangible necessities, systems navigation, and advocacy to help end the cycles of homelessness.
