Counselling/Listening - Elizabeth Fry Society: Advocate

The Elizabeth Fry Society (EFry) offers Pathways to Healing for women in conflict, or at risk of being in conflict, with the law by providing opportunities through supports and advocacy.

Court work program

Our court work program supports the EFry mission by placing volunteers in the court house in order to assist accused individuals in navigating the justice system. As a Regional Court - Airdrie Volunteer, you will support individuals (adult men and women; youth girls and boys) appearing at the Airdrie Provincial Court for first/subsequent provincial court appearances. You will be responsible for providing legal information to clients regarding court procedures, diversion programs, as well as referrals to legal and community resources, programs and further support.

Work location: Airdrie Courthouse (Suite 113 - 104 1st Ave NW

Time requirement: One shift every Thursday morning 8:45am to 11:00am with a commitment to volunteer for a minimum one year

Skills and Qualifications: 
- Over 18 years of age 
- Excellent Communication skills with the ability to listen well 
- Ability to be level headed in a fast paced environment 
- Willingness to work with clients with a variety of criminal charges without judgement or bias 
- Interest in the criminal justice system
- Desire to assist individuals in navagating the criminal justice system
- Able to follow agency policies and procedures

- Must attend agency training (sessions 6 evenings - Tues/Thur)
- Trained individually in court by staff

- Increase knowledge of the justice system and women's issues
