Parade - 2025 Parade Marshal & Safety Volunteer

Overview: Parade Marshal & Safety (MarSafe) Volunteers are the eyes and ears of the parade, ensuring the parade runs on time, smoothly, and that spectators can enjoy the event while staying safely out of the parade route. MarSafe Volunteers will be stationed along the parade route, in the middle of the action, directing contingents using signage to indicate when to speed up, slow down, or stop, and assisting with crowd control by directing attendees to designated crossing areas while maintaining a safe and fun environment. This role is best suited for confident, friendly volunteers who are comfortable engaging with large crowds and giving firm but polite directions.

Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure parade contingents proceed along the route on schedule.
• Hold and display signage to direct participants to speed up, slow down, or stop.
• Monitor the parade route to ensure spectators stay in designated areas.
• Direct attendees to official crossing sections and prevent unsafe crossings.
• Engage with the public in a friendly but firm manner to ensure safety.
• Assist with crowd control and keep the parade moving efficiently.
• Stand and walk along the parade route for extended periods in an outdoor environment.

Location: Check-in at the Parade Volunteer Check-in in Hillcrest (exact location to be announced).

Requirements:
• Minimum age: 18+
• General understanding and passion for LGBTQ+ gender and sexual orientation diversity issues.
• Understanding of San Diego Pride’s mission and vision.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate instructions effectively.
• Confident and professional in high-energy, fast-paced environments.
• Ability to work outdoors in intense heat, sun, and crowded spaces.
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Accessibility Options:
• Option to take breaks as needed.
• May encounter various sounds, smells, and large crowds.
• Requires standing and walking, or utilizing personal mobility device to move around, for extended periods.

Training or Support:
• General volunteer info sessions will be available before the Parade.
• Brief on-site training will be provided at the start of the shift.
• Parade team members will be available for support throughout the shift.
