SUMMARY: Q-Space Clubs are satellite programs of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center that expand our reach into El Dorado, Placer, and Yolo Counties. These clubs provide safe, affirming, and engaging spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults ages 13–24.

 

Volunteer Club Facilitators bring their skills, talents, and passions to life by creating inclusive, welcoming activities and modeling what it means to live authentically and thrive. Clubs may be education-based, activity-based, community-building, mental health-focused, or skill-centered.

Examples include:

  • Hosting Dungeons & Dragons sessions
  • Leading yoga or fitness classes
  • Organizing book clubs, arts activities, or cultural groups
  • Offering life skills workshops
  • Facilitating peer support spaces

 

Facilitators should be knowledgeable, skilled, or deeply passionate about their chosen topics and excited to share them with youth.

 

Satisfactory results of a background check are required for placement in this position. Results are considered thoughtfully and, on a case-by-case basis.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Create structured outlines for each club meeting in advance (with support from Center staff as needed).
  2. Lead and facilitate groups of LGBTQ+ youth and young adults ages 13–24, using empathy and confidence to establish and maintain group expectations.
  3. Maintain regular communication with Tri-Counties Youth Program staff to share insights, reflect on challenges, and receive feedback for growth.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Experience working with youth and transitional-aged youth (TAY), ages 13–24.
  2. Background in education, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring is strongly preferred.
  3. Knowledge of culturally competent and trauma-informed care, or willingness to complete training provided by the Center.
  4. Identify as LGBTQ+ or demonstrate a history of being an outspoken ally and advocate.
  5. Fluency in a threshold language is highly desired but not required.
  6. Experience engaging neurodivergent youth is preferred; otherwise, openness to learning best practices with guidance from staff.

  

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. In or near the community where Q-Space is located.
  2. 6 month commitment preferred, 3 month commitment considered for the right candidate.
  3. Experience working with the LGBTQ+ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ+ people.
  4. Passion for The Center’s mission and work to create a region where LGBTQ+ people thrive, and a commitment to follow all policies and procedures of the organization.
  5. Respect for everyone’s real or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, including pronouns.  
  6. Commitment to anti-racism and racial equity. 
  7. Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration statuses, and physical abilities in an intersectional environment.
  8. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; fluency to read, write, speak, and hear English.
  9. Business Casual attire and closed-toed shoes required.
  10. Physical Demands: Volunteers in this role will be required to convey detailed spoken instructions to others accurately, and to hear, understand, and distinguish in-person speech, lift up to 50lbs, use computers and office equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.  
  11. Drug and Alcohol-Free Policy: The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is committed to maintaining a safe, productive, and welcoming environment. Volunteers are expected to perform their duties free from the influence of drugs or alcohol. Individuals found under the influence while volunteering will face disciplinary action, up to and including permanent removal from the volunteer program.
