SUMMARY:

A Sac Town Youth Night event, “Sabor y Cultura” Night Market, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting the vibrant intersection of queer Latine identity and cultural connection. This event creates an affirming space where youth can connect with local LGBTQ+ Latine artists, support local Latine-owned businesses, and participate in workshops focused on mental and sexual health to help young people build knowledge, confidence, community, and the skills needed to lead healthy and empowered lives.  

 

Volunteers create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment where young people feel seen, valued, and empowered. Whether assisting with event operations, supporting presenters, or welcoming attendees, volunteers help to make the celebration a meaningful experience for LGBTQ+ youth and their families.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist with event set-up and/or breakdown, including moving supplies, arranging tables and chairs, and preparing event spaces.
  2. Welcome attendees and support registration and community member check-in.
  3. Help maintain a safe, inclusive, and youth-centered environment throughout the event.
  4. Monitor assigned event areas and communicate concerns or incidents to staff.
  5. Provide basic technical support for workshop presenters and performers, as needed and if able.
  6. Answer attendee questions and help direct participants to activities, workshops, and resources.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Experience interacting with the LGBTQ+ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ+ people.

Passion for The Center’s mission and work to create a region where LGBTQ+ people thrive, and a commitment to follow all policies and procedures of the organization.

  1. Respect for everyone’s real or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, including pronouns.  
  2. Commitment to anti-racism and racial equity. 
  3. Ability to interact respectfully and appropriately with youth and contribute to a physically and emotionally safe environment.
  4. Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration statuses, and physical abilities in an intersectional environment.
  5. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; fluency to read, write, speak, and hear English.
  6. Business Casual attire and closed-toed shoes required.
  7. Physical Demands: Volunteers in this role will be required to convey detailed spoken instructions to others accurately, and to hear, understand, and distinguish in-person speech, lift up to 50lbs, use computers and office equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.  
  8. Drug and Alcohol-Free Policy: The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is committed to maintaining a safe, productive, and welcoming environment. Volunteers are expected to perform their duties free from the influence of drugs or alcohol. Individuals found under the influence while volunteering will face disciplinary action, up to and including permanent removal from the volunteer program.
