Volunteer Community Group Facilitator

REPORTS TO:

Community Resources & Groups Coordinator

SCHEDULE:

1-2 hours per week

COMMITMENT:

12 months

LOCATION:

1015 20th St, Sacramento; Remote, via zoom

 

SUMMARY:  Volunteer Community Group Facilitators co-facilitate socializing and networking groups managed by the Center. Facilitators are required to be 21 years of age, or older, and identify with the community supported by the group they are co-facilitating.

 

We are currently seeking facilitators for the following community support groups:

  • Non-binary Support Group
  • BIPOC Support Group
  • Polyamory/ENM Group
  • Bereavement Support Group
  • Narcotics Anonymous Group
  • Alcoholics Anonymous Group

 

DUTIES:

  1. Create an environment in which all participants feel welcomed, respected, and valued.
  2. Take attendance at every meeting and provide the names and contact information of all attendees to the Community Resources & Groups Coordinator within 24 hours.
  3. Attend at least 50% of quarterly facilitator meetings.
  4. Effectively track and report all hours volunteered.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Commit to co-facilitating for at least 12 months.
  2. Commit to co-facilitating no fewer than 4 sessions per calendar year.
  3. Facilitators must be 21+ and identify with the community of the group they co-facilitate.
  4. At least 2 years' experience of being "out" as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and/or as a vocal ally preferred but not required.
  5. Ability to speak/read/write in English.
  6. Proficiency working with computers and Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Zoom. You must use your own computer, webcam, headphones, microphone and internet connection. Knowledge of virtual meeting etiquette needed. Experience using Apricot a bonus.
  7. Must agree to not socialize/establish friendships or romantic/sexual relationships with current or recent group participants outside of the group setting for the entire time you are a Volunteer Community Group Facilitator.
  8. Must be open-minded with a desire to learn and grow. Must be responsible, respectful, punctual and dependable.
  9. The person in this position will be required to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer with webcam on, and may be required to operate additional office equipment, and communicate messages by phone, text and email. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  10. This volunteer position requires satisfactory results of a criminal background check. Apart from convictions for violent crimes, every volunteer application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis if a criminal history is reported in the background check.
  11. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is a drug free workplace, and is committed to providing a safe, efficient, and productive work environment. Volunteers who report for service under the influence are subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.  
  12. As an organization, we fully support COVID-19 vaccinations and are requiring new volunteers to have either proof of full vaccination, written notice of an upcoming vaccination appointment, or an approved medical or religious exemption. Documentation will be required prior to your first day of service.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Passion for the Center’s mission and work to create a region where LGBTQ+ people thrive and a commitment to follow all policies and procedures of the organization.
  2. Familiarity with issues of relevance to LGBTQ+ people. Respect for everyone’s actual or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender-identity and gender expression, including pronouns.
  3. Commitment to anti-racism and racial equity.
  4. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; conflict resolution training and prior facilitation experience, especially virtual facilitation experience, highly desirable.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration statuses, and physical abilities in an intersectional environment.
  6. Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish, ASL, Mandarin Chinese, Hmong, Hindi, Vietnamese, Tagalog or Punjabi is preferred, but not required.
  7. Certification in Mental Health First Aid strongly preferred.
  8. CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
