One City Marathon Volunteer Opportunities


Celebrating its 10th year, the Newport News One City Marathon is a fun way to connect the community and inspire a healthy lifestyle.  With the One City Marathon beginning in the woods of Newport News Park and ending at the Yard District to showcase the beautiful James River, it provides an opportunity for the entire community to come out and take part in this exciting event.  Visitors will enjoy the natural beauty, friendly neighborhoods, cultural amenities, and thriving businesses the city has to offer.  Enthusiastic volunteers will certainly help create an experience that runners and fans will never forget.  Whether you are a runner, event volunteer, or fan, thank you for connecting with the City of Newport News as we celebrate all that is good in our city!

1.-Traffic Wardens, March 3, 2024

Traffic Wardens are vital on race day to maintain the safety of participants by keeping the race route clear of vehicular traffic and directing any vehicular traffic that is encountered to designated routes.  Wardens will be placed at locations to ensure vehicles stay clear of the runners and course.  You can also cheer runners on since you will be in the middle of the action.  This can be a very powerful experience as you encourage runners and have fun with this volunteer opportunity!

ALL TRAFFIC WARDEN VOLUNTEERS WILL BE CONTACTED AND NOTIFIED OF THEIR MEETING LOCATIONS.

Traffic Wardens will meet at a location.  At that location, you will be loaded onto a bus and dropped off at your designated post.  After the last runner passes, you and the traffic barriers have been moved, you will be picked up and returned to your car.  Wear comfortable shoes and get ready for a fun and rewarding experience!

Minimum Age to Participate: You must be 18 or older to participate.

Inclement Weather Details: All events are rain, snow, or shine, so dress appropriately.

Technical Requirements: You will be provided with a safety vest and directions on what to do in case of an emergency.

Waiver Details: All volunteers must agree to the terms and conditions of the USA Track & Field, Inc.

2.-ECO Station Patrol/Monitor - Yard District 23rd Street, March 3, 2024

Volunteers will serve to reduce the environmental impact of the event by assisting participants to use the appropriate ECO Station waste containers.  Recycling/composting/trash containers will be placed strategically throughout the venue and volunteers will educate the public about proper waste disposal.  Minimum 3-hour shifts and up to the duration of the event requested.  For more information contact the City's Sustainability Manager, at 757-269-2732.

*Events will be outdoors and volunteers should dress appropriately.

3.One City Celebration - Yard District - 23rd Street-Coastal Fermentory and Ironclad Distillery, March 3, 2024

The races are over, let the celebration begin! Once runners finish the race, everyone will be ready for a One City, One Celebration. Bring out the Martha Stewart in you and assist race management and city staff to throw a post-race party that is fun for the entire family! You will help serve food and refreshments to finishers, help keep our city clean, make everyone feel well taken care of, and help to resolve any runner issues.

The first shifts starts early, to get everything ready for the celebration! If you like to take care of others and keep our city clean, then this is the opportunity for you!  

Minimum Age to participate: Volunteers must be old enough act responsibly and minors must volunteer with a parent or guardian.

5K and Nautical Mile Start Line - City Center At Oyster Point-Saturday, March 2, 2024

Volunteers will assist race organizers with various duties at the 5K/Nautical Mile start including but not limited to race registration, bag check, set-up, tear-down, and guiding participants to the correct areas.

Minimum Age to Participate: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Inclement Weather Details: All events are rain, snow, or shine, so dress appropriately.

Technical Details: Training and information will be provided by race management.

Half Marathon Start Line - 275 Menchville Road (Menchville H.S.)-Sunday, March 3, 2024

This will be a unique position to volunteer for at the event because you will be present for the start of the Half Marathon, and then see the entire full Marathon field from the same location.  Volunteers will assist race organizers with various duties at the Half Marathon Start including, but, not limited to race registration, bag check, set-up, tear-down, and guiding participants to the correct areas.  Once the Half Marathon gets started, volunteers will transition to assisting with the relay exchange for the full marathon relay.

Minimum Age to Participate:  Volunteers must be old enough to act responsibly and minors must volunteer with a parent or gurardian.

Inclement Weather Details:  All events are rain, snow, or shine, so dress appropriately.

Technical Details: Training and information will be provided by race management.

Shuttle Attendants, Sunday, March 3, 2024

Runners and spectators will be relying upon a shuttle bus program to get them where they are going, but it can be confusing.  We need volunteers who can keep folks on track and answer their questions so that they can use the shuttle program with ease!

Being lost or left behind can be a very frustrating experience!  We need volunteers who can keep everyone going and answer questions about the shuttle bus program.

Volunteers will be contacted by race management team.

Minimum Age to Participate: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Inclement Weather Details: All events are rain, snow, or shine, so dress appropriately.

Technical Details: Must have great customer service and verbal skills.  Bi-lingual and American Sign Language skills a plus!

Volunteer Food Drivers must possess a valid driver's license and passed the City's Defensive Driving Course.

Minimum Age to Participate: You must be 18 or older to participate.

Technical Requirements: Must have a valid driver's license and authorized to drive a city vehicle.
