Protect Our Winters UK is a charity formed to educate and support UK outdoor sports communities to mobilise and take positive action on climate change, starting with snowsports.

We do this by engaging individuals and organisations through their snowsports livelihoods and passions. We educate them on the risks of climate change and support them to take effective action.

Trustee - Fundraising

POW UK trustee tasks and responsibilities

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) states that Charity trustees are the people who have general control and management of the charity and are responsible for making sure that the charity works to achieve its purpose.

POW UK is a young charity and is going through an exciting growth phase in 2019/2020. POW UK is currently refreshing its 6 person trustee board. Each POW UK trustee is requested to take ownership for a portfolio of responsibilities, for example, marketing and communications, merchandise, fundraising, accounts etc. This should include setting the objectives for their portfolio and delivering against these.

Note that employees of POW UK are prevented from being charity trustees.


Who we’re looking for


The ideal POW UK trustee will be an experienced leader in the business or charity sectors who can plan and deliver against their portfolio responsibilities.

They will have experience working on their own initiative and taking ownership of a project or task, with the ability to help to build and motivate a volunteer team.
They will have a personal commitment to the mission and values of Protect Our Winters and a drive to support others to take effective action.

Time Commitment


Time commitment for this role may fluctuate depending on the availability of trustees and portfolio responsibilities, however Autumn/Winter are generally busier with summer a quieter period for POW UK. Overall, trustees are asked to contribute a few hours a week to POW UK business.

Winter Guardian

Role and Responsibilities

POW's Winter Guardians are tasked with raising awareness of POW in their local winter sports community

As a Winter Guardian volunteer, your responsibilities fall into these key areas:

Friends of POW Engagement - Sign-up 50 individuals across your resort to the POW UK mailing list

Education - Organise 2 POW education sessions. These can be via showing a POW film or delivering the POW talk. Sessions can be given in a pub or ski club, at a school or as part of a festival or other event. POW can provide film suggestions and/or a powerpoint talk.

Campaign Actions - Take part in at least four POW campaign actions and encourage Friends of POW to participate. These are often simple tasks like; writing a campaign message to your MP, digitally lobbying a polluting industry via social media and delivering grassroots campaigns around carbon positive actions to your community.

Fundraising - Organise at least one fundraising event in your resort – aiming to raise a minimum of £100 through fundraising 

Training and Events - Attend a POW UK summit or training event if you can. If not possible watch a POW webinar

Get involved with other POW Events where you can – either in the Alps or around the UK - such as: The Telegraph London Ski Show, The Sheffield Mountain Film Festival, The Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival, The Kendal Mountain Film Festival and local community events

Who we’re looking for

The ideal Winter Guardian will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be confident delivering the POW message

They will have experience working on their own initiative and taking ownership of a project or task

They will have a personal commitment to the mission and values of Protect Our Winters and a drive to support others to take effective action

Time Commitment

Time commitment for this role varies depending on the events you're organising and attending, but we hope you'll spend between 5-15 hours per month
