Snow School Junior Instructor
The Junior Instructor plays an essential role in the success of WinSport’s Snow School programs, through delivering excellent guest service, assisting Instructors during lessons and working with the learners to encourage development within the sport.
Volunteers must be confident skiing or snowboarding.
Youth have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, and move through a path to a paid role in future.
Responsibilities
- Assist with directing students to lesson locations
- Identify opportunities to assist the instructor and take initiative to assist
- Make students and parents feel comfortable at beginning of class
- Entertain the class with simple games while they are waiting for the lesson to start
- Demonstrate the lesson on the request of the instructor
- Assist instructors by accompanying the students on the lifts when required
- Provide immediate assistance to students who have fallen
- Assist with instilling a knowledge and respect for the Alpine Responsibility Code in the students
- Work with primarily children 3-6 years old, but with demonstrated learning, may be assigned to other age groups
- Provide additional assistance as requested by the instructor
- Act as a mentor, being responsible and demonstrating maturity at all times
- Read and abide by all information contained in the team member handbook and training manuals
- Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
- Refrain from instructing participants
Qualifications
- Comfortable interacting with young children
- Confident skier or snowboarder, and passionate about the sport
- Demonstrated ability to take direction
- Willingness to learn and be open to coaching
- Problem solving and decision making skills
- Desire to become a ski or snowboard instructor an asset
- Interest in supporting WinSport in delivering our mission
- Willingness to participate in WinSport's Youth Leadership Program
Physical Demands
- Fast paced outdoor environment in cold conditions
- Four hour week night shifts and eight hour weekend shifts
- Helping to lift students who have fallen (40-60lbs)
- Skiing/snowboarding
- Standing for extended periods of time
